Algazel Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Hi all, I am enrolled to begin an MPhil in Philosophy in the UK this autumn. I enjoy the subject in its broad storkes but the more I have read Phd and academic grade philosophy I find it overwhelmingly pedantic. I don't plan to continue beyond the MPhil to a Phd or work in academic Philosophy. Whar are your thoughts on the value of completing the MPhil for its own sake? Is it a waste of time if I don't have any plans to upgrade it? Any wider merits in studying the MPhil? Definitely hope people where share their thoughts ...
ianfaircloud Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 This question (or variations of it, e.g. "MA without the PhD") has been addressed quite a few times, with great responses each time (that I've seen the question). But this site is so incredibly disorganized that I can't find the post.My thoughts in brief:Yes, a master's degree without the terminal degree in philosophy may be worth it to some people. I'm sure that doesn't surprise you. The reasons: (a) intrinsic value of learning philosophy; (b) time and place to explore the field further, to learn whether you're sure that it's not right for you; (c) stepping stone to non-philosophy graduate degree, e.g. neuroscience, political theory, law, etc.
