J-2 Visa

Hi grads!

As far as I understand, a J-2 holder (a dependent) can study in the US part time or full time. Anybody knows if a J-2 is able to receive funding from a university? E.g. Pursuing an M.A. Degree.

If this potential J-2 visa holder is going to be pursuing a MA (or other graduate) degree with funding, it might be best if they get their own student visa status (i.e. they can be on F-1 status). But to answer your question directly, I think it is possible if the J-2 applies for and receives an Employment Authorization Document, which will enable them to work, if that is necessary to receive the funding.

 

But this is also something the J-2 should talk to their graduate school about to find out if the EAD is necessary etc. Or talk to an attorney. Note that while most schools' international student offices will help you as best they can, it is solely your responsibility to maintain the correct status.

Thank you TakeruK. I've read a lot of things about J-2 dependents working but very few about studying. I will contact the graduate school for more specific things.
