I know the Graduate Director and he's a very nice guy, but it looks like they've made up their mind. There's a small sliver of hope, depending on how many people accept/reject the offer, but it doesn't look so good. So I've officially decided to go to Florida State. Hopefully I'll see some of you there! Wow congrats on deciding! Must be a relief to just know! Have you heard funding decision from FSU?

I still hold out hope! liesandfish, looks like I'll be joining your wine and whine session. FSU, eh? Depending on funding, we may be confederates there, my friend.

liesandfish Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 anyone know much about university fellowships?
Partinrn Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Yeah I spoke with Dr. Sullivan, the Graduate Director. They send out email acceptances. The faculty at UC is amazing (I'm still doing research there), but FSU has some really good faculty members as well. No decision on funding yet for FSU, but I'll make it work. phdincrim2016 and altikr25 2

That being said, you know how UC works (he said they all went out, but Jean Gary may not have sent them yet). All I can confirm is that the 15 have been chosen; I don't know if they have been delivered to the email addresses yet as I'm not one of the 15 per Dr. Sullivan.

I just got an email from her on Thursday saying my file was complete. That would be an awfully fast turnaround! :-) [My file has been complete since mid-November] Edited January 27, 2016 by phdincrim2016
Partinrn Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 On a somewhat related noted: what do you guys think about getting all three degrees from the same institution (Bach, master, PhD)? I was told by one of the professors I work with that some employers (read as academia) don't like to see the same school from start to finish; I'm not sure I fully agree with that premise. Thoughts? (Maybe it's me trying to rationalize not getting into UC!) liesandfish and altikr25 2

(Maybe it's me trying to rationalize not getting into UC!) I have heard this too. The idea is that going to a different school for at least one is that it shows you can succeed elsewhere, and not just because you were with the same faculty/people for all of it. I think also going multiple places shows you can get through applications and study under a variety of people. I don't know that it really matters, I've seen faculty who did all three at the same place just as professionally and academically successful as others. altikr25 and Partinrn 2
Partinrn Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 That does make sense, fish. I thought it might have something to do with expanding your mind, so to speak. Did you accept UCF's offer?
liesandfish Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Not yet, I still have 5 apps out with no decision, so I am waiting a little longer. But UCF did nominate me for a graduate fellowship, so I'm just weighing my options. I didn't think I would get into this many and have to decide. Good problem to have. For the record, my acceptances/funding options show that GRE is not everything!!! Partinrn 1

My GRE was horrendous but so far I'm 2 for 3, with one of them being FSU (didn't think I'd get in...now I'm praying I get funded). It's better to be in our situation rather than the alternative! To be honest though, I'm sure everyone who's on this forum will get in somewhere; we're all talented and not defined by a rudimentary test.

What do you think strengthened your application? I'm obsessing, please indulge me. Also, how old is everyone on here? I'm wondering if there is an age preference, like if most of you are fresh out of school (early to mid 20s) or older.

My quant was 146, verbal was 151 with an AWA of 4.5. My letters, GPA, statement of purpose, and thesis (writing sample) were my strongest points. I have no publications but have a couple years of research experience at UC. I'm 29 (boy do I feel old). I also believe in being a good fit. Florida State accepted me because of Dr. Kevin Beaver, a man whose interests are closely related to my own. Personally I think the GRE (and other standardized tests) is a horrible predictor; I flunked the SAT and ACT but did extremely well in undergrad and in my masters program. That's why I meant what I said: all of us on this forum have something special and will end up doing great things, regardless of our GRE scores. liesandfish Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) Disclaimer** I HATE talking about my stats because I either feel pathetic or douchey. So upfront, I apologize for either way. I am almost 27, I had a V153, Q150, AWA 6. My letters, statement and thesis are strong. I have two pubs and four pending review. I have presented at 5 conferences and done international research. Plus other research and teaching experience. I'm horrible at tests. So do my strong points are definitely all my extras. I think everyone has more to offer than test scores. Critical thinking comes from a lot more than answering a fill in the blank question. Just my two cents! Edited January 27, 2016 by liesandfish Partinrn and phdincrim2016 2

I think everyone has more to offer than test scores. Critical thinking comes from a lot more than answering a fill in the blank question. Just my two cents! Okay well I am 30... I finished my BA last year after a career as a pastry chef and having my daughter. I've always had an interest in Criminal Justice, my first major was forensic science in 2003. My verbal was 155, I'd rather not say my quant. because I am so embarrassed. I took the test on 34th street here in NYC and there were plenty of fire engines and police sirens to hear through the earplugs I was wearing. Combined with the fluorescent lighting I suffered a horrible migraine attack. My writing was like a 4 but I think (hope) the sample I provided will take care of that. I am capable of research at John Jay, I know this because I've already done it there under the advisement of a wonderful distinguished professor. He wrote one of my letters so fingers crossed! I graduated with a 3.86 cum, 2 majors in 3 1/2 years while raising my kid alone and working. That test is no measure of my capabilities (eye roll). I'm so glad to have a forum filled with people I can relate to. Right now I work at Bronx DA, working here has given me PLENTY of research ideas.
