@wannabeDr @Partinrn  Hey guys! I'm really hoping to do more RA than TA for my assistantship and also really want to work with Dr. Barnes.  Any advice about how I could increase my chances with either?

THanks!

Well definitely show a major interest in biosocial criminology, and a secret of J.C. is he really likes using "R" for stat analysis. Other than that I would just be honest with him. Let him know you enjoy reading his work and you would like to help him any way possible (that's how I got in with Nedelec).  Good luck!

Hello all,

I am planning on applying for some Criminology Phd programs for the fall of 2016.  I was wondering what kind of variety we are having for that year, so I decided to post my stats/info in hopes that some may reciprocate.

Prospective schools applying to:

U of Cincinnati
FSU
NE University
Upenn
UC Irvine
SUNY Albany
Temple
Rutgers

GRE: V/Q/A 161/155/5.0

Undergrad         GPA: 3.73
Grad (Master's) GPA: 3.85

Research: None, just some data experience.

Sentiment: Super excited to begin studies; somewhat anxious to apply.

Hi, I hope you can be lucky, but the deadlines are passed for many universities in U.S. I also have some question about universities in california. Would you please help me about them?????

The only school I applied to that may still take application (although without funding) is FSU.

According to their page, they take applications until July 1 (http://criminology.fsu.edu/degrees/graduate-programs/doctoral-program/ph-d-admission-requirements/).  Funding deadline was in January.

Good luck!

Here's to hoping we all hear good things this week. I hope to hear from my final three applications but I am 95% sure I know my decision. I just want to have all the information before I make it! Once I do, I plan to formally accept and decline my other offers.

Ready to move onto the next step of figuring out budget, housing, and then months of waiting to start and moving. :)

Hoping to hear something this week too! I'm assuming I've been rejected from Albany and Northeastern. Waitlisted at Delaware and then also waiting to hear from American and Indiana, they were both due pretty late.

At least you are pretty sure where you are going and can focus on the next step, that is so exciting! Congratulations! Im not looking forward to the moving aspect of this either! This whole process has been pretty intense...one giant anxiety attack!

@KnowVac I'm waiting to hear back from American as well (and ASU). Good luck!

@liesandfish I'm jealous! I need to get through these visits. I think that if I haven't heard from American and ASU by the time I visit Rutgers (March 4th) then I will make my decision based on the three schools I know about. The limbo is stressful when you consider the fact that you need to start planning things like moving, etc.

I am lucky, four of the schools I am accepted to are in Florida and I currently live in Florida so visiting them was fairly easy. And then I received a fantastic fellowship offer so that I would be silly to turn down, so it made my decision pretty easy (plus I loved the school and faculty).

I hope you hear soon from American (and elsewhere!) @ThesisTerror724 @KnowVac . At least the visit is coming up quickly and should provide some insight into whether you like it or not.

It is so stressful! I knew it would be but then all the new things to think about happened that I hadn't even considered prior (I mean I knew I would be moving but the reality of it is different!). I am so grateful for this forum though, it has made me feel less crazy for being so consumed and stressed. :)

I agree. Congrats on the fellowship! I have been in contact with FSU and there is no funding for me (at all) throughout the first year. Needless to say I gave them a formal rejection. I have a couple of schools that are offering me fellowships but now the stress of planning a move is creeping up!

@liesandfish  SO jealous!!!  I totally wish I was in your position!!  Very, very happy for you.

Just like @ThesisTerror724... I have to make it through the in-person interview.  Although, I think at Rutgers you are pretty much in.  :D  Can I ask... if it is too personal I understand (and I am not trying to overstep)... Did you have a faculty recommendation from Rutgers?

I'm still at the super nervous stage of waiting it out for the in-person interview and praying that it all goes well. :)

FINGERS CROSSED!!!!

From what I can tell from the results of previous years, ASU is notorious for posting acceptances late, usually around the 25th of Feb to the 4th of March. I'm hoping that we hear from them earlier than that- ten more days is almost too much for me! Good luck!

I think that for the first year doctorate students they only give TAs. They prefer to give the RAs to more advanced students. Unless you have extended research experience. I am sure they would not mind discussing it then. Dr. Barnes is super cool and I also want to work with him! He works on some very specific topics at the moment as far as he told me, so you can email him and ask. Even if your assistantship is a TA I am sure he won't mind keeping you in mind for the future or including you. He is a really nice person, and I think it is worth emailing him.

I am going to ask my mentor this as well, but just in case someone knows here!

At what point will my manuscripts switch to be under the university I accept? I have four or five manuscripts in the works (I'm not in school right now, lots of free time to finish all the things I started!) but I currently am sending things out under the university I recieved my masters from. Does anyone know? Does this change once I formally accept, once I begin in August? There is no conflict with my current university, they have no preference for if I publish under them.

I ask because for ASC and my SCJA presentations will be under my new universities name, and this should the manuscripts?

Congratulations to all of you, who were accepted! I am still waiting to hear from Maryland. Honestly, I hate waiting but there is literally nothing I can do against it. Do you guys know whether we can find out the ranking in a waiting list? Or is it better to not email the department again, as I do not want to appear annoying? I emailed already before about my ranking, however I was told that this is their task for this week. This was two weeks ago, but never received an email about my ranking. What do you guys think?

Personally I would wait a little longer if you've contacted them regarding your position on the list already.  I don't believe there are literal numbers (for us anyway) as to the position on a wait list; especially for UMD. That being said, if you haven't heard back by the end of the week I don't think it would hurt to send another correspondence.  You may be able to find an arbitrary ranking (high on the list, low, medium, etc) but I don't think they would tell you how many are in front of (or behind) you. Keep your head high and best of luck!

Not too personal and no I did not, a faculty member in my department told me about the program but he did not write a recommendation for me.

Just out of curiosity, do you guys think there's a difference between an interview and when the school says it's a grad preview? I've never done an "interview" but I am flying down to a school, all expenses paid, for three days. Needless to say I'm nervous...

I have always taken it as a preview is when you have already been accepted, and the school is trying to get you to choose their program. An interview is when they still haven't decided on you, and the interview process will help decide the acceptance and funding. I may be wrong, but there you go.

Speaking of, is anyone else attending USF's graduate recruitment weekend on the 4th & 5th?

@Partinrn I agree with ^^ @Cedodge I would look at it more as recruitment/preview not interview. Congrats! They wouldn't likely pay for someone to visit who isn't going to be accepted. :)

@Cedodge I am still debating whether I will go or not. Like I've mentioned my mind is pretty made up but I also think going could be beneficial. So I may go. I assume you are going?

Yes, USF and MSU have both made reasonable funding offers, so I would like to get a better idea each of the programs faculty and cohort before I make any decisions.

Maybe I will see you there!

I was accepted into Indiana's program today. Finally able to breathe a sigh of relief now that I know I will be going somewhere lol no word on funding yet but will hear something before March 1st.

Anyone else hear back from any programs they are still waiting on?

@Cedodge that's awesome! Good for you, two fantastic choices! I was not funded (well actual email says "unlikely" so I'm assuming unless someone turns down a funded offer) at USF, so I am leaning toward not going, since I have known funding elsewhere. But it's pretty close for me so I may end up just to see. Either way, congrats to you!

@KnowVac CONGRATS! Great news! I hope you hear positive news for funding! I still have three apps out, but I heard unofficially from a POI that I was accepted to one of them (no funding info yet), one says "under review" on the portal, and the other I know for sure the committee met today. So all in all I expect to hear from all places soon. That will be a huge relief. Do you still apps out?

@liesandfish I hope we hear something this week but if not I'd except to hear something by the last week in Feb for sure... I still have two out at Albany and Northeastern, both portals say under review as well. I also have an app out at American.
