milktea1993 Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Hello everyone! I'm having a hard time figuring out which universities offer graduate programs that allow you work your way up to a PhD, getting your MA in the process. Any thanks would be appreciated!
fencergirl Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 There are quite a number of them - are you looking for a complete list? Some schools that came up in a quick google search that offer Ph.D programs in EALC are NYU, Brown, Berkeley, U of Chicago, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, UCI, and UCSB. There are probably more. Some programs offer a separate MA and Ph.D program like University of Toronto. But I think it'd be more effective to focus on those with professors you'd be interested in working with long term at schools with strong programs overall. I suggest asking your professors or people you know in your area of focus what programs they know of/recommend.
kyjin Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Most (but not all) PhDs will give you an MA after you complete quals. Contact specific programs to find out if this is the case. But like fencergirl says, you should look at specific professors you want to work with and strong programs. Some programs will prefer if you come in with an outside MA first even if they give you an MA along the way. (This is true in my case; I'll be getting my "second" MA this spring after quals.)
