Hello!!

I'm Spanish, located in madrid :) I'm begining to take a look to MS in US. I would like you to give me advise. I have been working with Oracle databases for more than 8 years, and I would like to study a MS o postraduate program related to databases or Bigdata ( I studied Computing in the University in Spain, 4 years). I would like to be in the East Coast, but I dont know if this is a good idea, since most of the IT companies are in the West coast. I only see hundreds of universities and programs and I'm totally lost. The last thing, the target is to start working ASAP with an OPT visa, so I would like to study something during a year and after that trying to find a job.

I really apreciate all your comments.

Thanks in advance.

What did you study before?  You can take 3 or 4 classes as part of a computer science, applied computer science, or software engineering  masters.

Otherwise you can also apply for analytics and information management programs.

It is true that the bigger companies and many startups are out west, but there are also many companies all over the US.

I studied computer science in Madrid, I finished it. But i dont know if it is going to be considered as a bachelor or a MS. At this point, I suppose that the university where I would study decide it.

I have been reading about certificates at universities. This can be more interesting for me since they can be more related to my profile.

Any website where I can find this info?

Thanks again

If you plan to get a visa I do not think certificates qualify.

This appears to be the typical requirements for a bachelors equivalent degree from Spain

Completion of a Título de Licenciado (Licenciate), Título de Ingeniero (Title of Engineer), or Título de Arquitecto (Title of Architect)

Required Documentation:  Certificacion Academica Oficial (CAO) or the Certificacion Academica Personal and degree certificates

Depending on the university, this also falls into the category of information science, which might actually be hidden under library sciences (at least it is at Rutgers where I am)

Hi there!,
Another Spaniard from Madrid here. I am currently doing a PhD at North Carolina State University so maybe I can shed some light.

While it is true that the tech boom happened in the west, the area I am in, the Triangle in North Carolina is also a high tech area and lots of big companies have headquarters or branch offices here  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research_Triangle_Park)  so the opportunities do exist. Now, I don't know if when you say East coast you are just thinking of NY or Boston (which are obviously good places for job search) or you are willing to go to less known places like, for instance, Raleigh, home of North Carolina State University from what I've heard a great school for computer science.

I am not sure about OPT with a certificate but I would also say than in most places you will be competing against the zillion graduates with MS or Professional MS degrees. I would look into Professional Masters. They usually last just one year and I think they do provide OPT (although, once again, I'm not totally sure about that. Make sure to check that out).

Good luck!
