hopetobeSLP Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Hello,I am a fourth year student applying to SLP for my first time this year!!With a few more months to get in experience, and complete the last courses that will be considered into my sub-GPA, I am struggling to figure out where to devote most of my energy. If you have been accepted to a Canadian school and could provide me with any information as to whether you believe that my application will be competitive (stats in my signature), it would be greatly appreciated! I am most concerned about my GPA but am also trying to figure out if getting some research experience at this point would increase my chances at all. Any help is so greatly appreciated!! Amber
speechiehopeful Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Hey Amber, I see you are from Guelph? I went to Guelph for my undergrad! I applied last year to UofT and Western but didn't get in so this year I am doing one year at Brock to get more speech-related pre-reqs. (I studied Child and Youth at Guelph). I'm also going to apply to Alberta and Dal. Although I haven't gotten it yet, I try to talk to everyone I can about applications! One of my profs this year gave me the advice to get the best marks possible. Since you already have a lot of volunteer experience, try not to overwhelm yourself with volunteering because someone with higher marks usually gets in over someone with lower marks and a ton of volunteering. (I have heard it's usually 50% grades and 50% for everything else but not sure if that's true). Maybe do a few hours this semester but do too much that your grades suffer. Also if you don't get in the first time it is much easier to get more volunteering experience than it is to boost your GPA after you have already graduated since a few more courses won't make much difference to your GPA. Also try really hard to get good marks in your prereq courses (I know for UofT they want at least a B+ in all of your prereqs). If you want to talk about anything feel free to message me!
