The main benefit of the study of history is to dispel the illusion that people living now are significantly different from people who lived in earlier times.

Answer :

The study of history is actually the pioneer of most of the current studies .An unquenched urge to know about the past is instilled in most of our blood. This has automatically paved a way for studies about history and related fields like archeology, social science and so on. Enlightment in this field has gradually made the humans to think about their predecessors and find a coherent relation witht them.  History actually explains the way we have evolved to the present situation, rather than dispelling the illusion of difference between the incumbent generation and our forefathers.

Human beings and of course all the current living beings are transmuted or "metamorphosed" form of living creatures. We do have an important lineage, though bit cryptic had been the most controversial research topic of the century. History or the study of the past actually helps us to find more about the transition process. If it was trying to debunk the notion of difference between the current and past human beings, by now there wouldnot have been so much inventions, suplanting the old beliefs regarding our evolution. The archeological study concerning Indo-Aryan civilization would substantiate my point. Initially historians believed that , Egyptian civilizations were the oldest existing civilizations, untill the research team in Indian found traces or Harappan culture which had even primitive life styles than most other  cultures. So the study of history rendered a new idea than disregarding the illusion of difference.

Secondly, the study of history precisley help us in pointing out that the generations previous to ours are different from us in many ways. the point made in issue is directly contradicted here. The comprehending sudy regarding the Mughal empire and their territories could be taken into consideration. Mughals actually had severe tax systems , including pilgrimage taxes which are levied on a regular basis if people had to undergo religious homages. As far as I know there is no contemperory government systems collecting pilgrimage taxes from their people. So the deliberate study of history brings out these subtle differences between people and practices of old and current generation.

Nonethless , the history is not always discursive, the interretaions are based on evidences and manuscripts left out by our predecessors. The information which is used to decipher about past plays a decisive role in our conclusions. There are exapmles when history itself is misleading and construes ideas which are totaly ambigous. The real motives of British behind partioning of India and leaving it in a turbulent state still lie as a loghead for many.

On the contrary certain similarities between different generation can be brought out by studying about the people and their lifestyles. We can infer that emperor Napolean and Ashoka were contempraries due the presence of same trade coins in places where their kindoms existed. So on the whole we can blatantly deny that study of history would dispel the illusion of significant difference between people , rather they may point out some similarities and differences between the people of both time period.
