stmas78 Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 As I haven't seen any threads on Yale's Jackson Institute, I thought to start one Has anybody else out there applied to the MA in Global Affairs? Looking at past years' results it seems that we will have to wait a bit longer for any news I am international student who decided to apply even though it's a huge reach (I think). I haven't applied to other programs as I didn't think they would fit and as I have a pretty good plan B in case this doesn't work out. What's your story?
stmas78 Posted February 13, 2016 Author Posted February 13, 2016 As nobody has responded yet and, I thought to start the conversation with my own background info. Previous Schools (Name, type, or tier): University in Switzerland - not too known.Previous Degrees and GPAs: BA Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies - GPA 3.6; MA Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies/Gender Studies - discontinued, GPA for the first year 3.77GRE Scores (Verbal/Quantitative/Analytical Writing): 170 / 162 / 4.5Previous Work Experience (Years, Type): 2 years working in different functions with two NGOs on the ground in Egypt with focus on gender, sexuality, violence against women, multiple consultancies with international organizations for conferences, 1 and a half years working in an IT department, 1 year of freelance translation and web development, plus some work as TA at my previous University both on undergrad and graduate level.Math/Econ Background: None, except for what I had in High School. Foreign Language Background (if applicable to your program): Mother tongues: Italian, German; Fluent: English, Arabic; Good: French; Elementary: Farsi (used to be good), Spanish.Experience abroad: 3 years in Egypt, month in Morocco, 3 months in AustraliaIntended Field of Study in Grad School: Violence and the State, especially in connection with the analysis of Big Data; International Human Rights.Long Term Professional Goals: Not quite sure yet. Hopefully a position in which I can make use of both my academic and IT skills Schools Applied to: Yale Jackson Institute. I felt that Jackson was the only program offering me both a very flexible curriculum allowing me to explore topics I haven't yet covered, but want to, and the right courses for my intended field of study. It would be incredible to get accepted, but am not too hopeful as I would also need good funding to accept.

stmas78 Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 Yaaaaay! Hi! I don't think I have big chance either, but I wanted to give it a try Only a few more weeks, hopefully and we will know
ticoindc Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Likewise! Got a couple of friends and former colleagues at Jackson and they only have good things to say about it. So hope it works out!
stmas78 Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 Hallo to you to! It's great to know I am not the only one that applied and is now anxiously awaiting an answer Do you mind if I ask what kind of background you guys have?
ticoindc Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Hey there, sure thing. I've been in DC for the better part of a decade. Did my undergrad here in IR. I have been working at a leading think-tank for over five years now and feel that it is time to expand, both educationally and professionally, by going back to school. I work mostly on Latin America and climate change issues, so want to focus on that during my MA. I did ok on the GRE, not the best, but don't think it's an accurate representation of a candidate. Math/Econ, did the required courses in undergrad, and intend to challenge myself in a MA to improve my quant skills. I speak three languages fluently, and grew up abroad my entire life. March is around the corner!

March is around the corner! Those are very promising stats ! I would think you have a great chance to get in And yes, March is around the corner. I am getting nervous, but at the same trying not to get my hopes up. They only admit very few people, so the chances are not great.
Danbrenn Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I applied as well. I think I am a long shot, esp because they gave me a hard pass last year. Should be right around the corner though. We heard around next week last year.
