slot Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this: I have a degree in a non-philosophical humanity from a very highly regarded university. I took no classes in philosophy there. I am now studying for a philosophy masters. Does my undergrad degree give me any advantage? Or none? Or just a little bit?
janeaude Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Admission committees would probably concentrate most on your masters education. Your undergrad will, AT MOST, not disadvantage you. It depends on how high you're aiming but top departments reject even those with philosophy undergrad degrees from top universities (think harvard, princeton, yale) and from universities with highly ranked philosophy departments (Rutgers, Michigan, etc). I don't think the prestige of your undergrad university will put you in any position of advantage. This isn't to say you won't get into great PhD programs. But if you do, it'll be because of your writing sample, your references, and so on, not because of where you did your undergrad degree. NathanKellen 1
