When do I fill out my FAFSA?

OK, this whole financial thing has me a bit confused. I just wanted to know, when do I fill out this FAFSA form- when I'm applying or after I've (hopefully) been accepted somewhere? I don't want to miss any deadlines...

If you're applying for the 2010-2011 academic year, the FAFSA becomes available online on January 1st. Good luck!

Is it worth it to check off work study on the FAFSA form? Will you get the same amount in loans instead of work if you don't check it? I have always checked it as an undergrad, but I'm concerned about time management and the work load at the graduate level.
