geo717 Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 I recently applied for a PhD position in Germany (coming from United States). The directions in the position posting had me send my application to the professor's email. I haven't heard anything, which I haven't worried much about because the deadline hasn't passed, but I started wondering - do I know that my email wasn't filtered or put into the junk email? If they don't confirm receipt, there's no way to really know. So my question: Is it typical for the professor to confirm that they received your application? If not, would it seem pushy to email and ask (I sent the application a week ago)? If I do email and ask, I suppose there is a good chance that email would go into the junk folder as well if my application did. Anyway, thank you for any replies. I just keep finding new things to worry about!
fuzzylogician Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 Whenever I submit anything via email I always say something like "I would appreciate a reply confirming that you have received my submission." If I don't hear back, I'll follow up and confirm again a few days later. Since you didn't write that and you haven't received confirmation, I think it's fair to follow up and make sure. I'd wait maybe a week, then do it. Since you say the deadline hasn't passed, it's totally possible that the professor just isn't dealing with the applications right now. But as long as you're polite, there is no harm in asking. geo717 1
geo717 Posted April 8, 2016 Author Posted April 8, 2016 Thanks, I appreciate the response. I'm probably just over-worrying at this point, but I'll try checking in next week:)
