Hi! I am an international student and am not very familiar with the American graduate school system, but here's my problem.

I have applied to several Journalism masters and until now I am accepted by two schools.

And among these schools is my number two of preference, and they notified me today that I can apply for assistantship until the end of this week.

But the thing is, that I have not heard yet from one school which happens to be my favorite, but they already told me that notifications are send out in the first week of April. (that is, after the end of this week. yay.)

Is it then wise to apply for an assistantship at the school I am already accepted to? Can I decline their offer afterwards?

I am at work at the moment and pretty much confused.

Help me please?

Yeah. Applications for assistantships have no bearing on your decision to attend. You need to know if you're going to be supported financially by the university *before* you make a decision.

So, definitely apply for the assistantship. Whether you get it or not, you owe them no allegiance for turning in an application.
