Timothy Vallier Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Didn't read the entire thread, but maybe someone could help me out with a question. The only school I applied to is NYU (music technology master's program). I did not submit test scores, as NYU doesn't need them for this particular program. I had a 3.3 gpa at a highly selective liberal arts college (undergrad) and majored in music & technology. What are my chances of getting in? This is a tough one. NYU may not be as highly selective as your undergrad but the problem with them is that they are in NYC. They yield extremely high amounts of applicants because of their geographical location which means more competition for you. I'm sure your portfolio weighs higher than your GPA, so if you feel confident about that you should stand a pretty good chance. Your only problem will be funding, from what I have gathered, they base all funding on GRE and GPA. If you don't mind sharing, where did you receive your undergrad?
Timothy Vallier Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Anyone in this thread want to claim that acceptance from SUNY Buffalo for Music Theory?! Congrats!
jose Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Amazing! I never thought I'd find a proper music composition thread on here... a lot of great advice on this thread, I wish I had found it earlier. Alas, I guess I'll add my two cents. I applied for the phd in composition to Columbia, Harvard, UC Berkely, McGill, UC Davis, UC San Diego and for the MA in Stony Brook. My biggest issues were getting the letters of recommendation in on time, but it seems to have worked out - I just got offers from Davis and Stony Brook. Still waiting to hear back from the rest. I was wondering, since most people here are applying to similarly competitive programs, what do you guys think between Davis and Stony Brook? Any preferences? I'd be really grateful for any input.. Anyway, best of luck to everyone! I'd be happy to share my portfolio or any other info with anyone who is curious Jose

I have a couple of questions. Where did you go for your undergrad? Do you currently have an MA or MM? (I'm really just curious of your applications at both the masters and doctoral level)

Do you currently have an MA or MM? (I'm really just curious of your applications at both the masters and doctoral level) Thanks, Timothy. I went to Columbia as an undergraduate (2007, BA in music), and I don't currently have a masters. I actually applied to Princeton, NYU and Duke last year and got rejected from all three of them, so I've been really beefing up my portfolio for this year. You can hear my portfolio at gabrielbolanos.com/music - the pieces I used this year are Vocal Study #2, Mako and the Ouroboros Miniatures. I listened to your music, it's really great stuff! Makes me wish I had a proper ensemble piece

angesa01 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Congratulations to whoever is accepted to SUNY Buffalo Musicology!
mus68 Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Hi, Another musicologist here! Congrats to those who've had good news. I'd do anything for some right about now! Anyone heard anything from Yale - good or bad? I'm crossing my fingers that no news = I didn't get rejected in the first round of cuts! That's one way to work the positive thinking:)
yehk Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 hey mus68 - I've applied to Yale as well! When you say 'first round of cuts' - does that mean they reject a whole load of people early on, before they make the final decisions? I phoned them up last week because i wanted to check if my supplementary materials had arrived in the snail mail (of course they got lost in the mail, so typical) so i had to do some damage control. The grad officer at the music department told me that the committee were processing applications 'now' (which was last week) so i expect to hear from them soon.. if the results page is anything to go by, we should be hearing next week. Fingers crossed!!! :S
mus68 Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Hi yehk - I don't know for definate, but I figured that's probably how they do it, as a friend of mine was rejected pretty earlier a couple of years ago (late jan/beginning of feb) & none of the other Ivies seem to make final decisions that early...so, I though maybe they made initial rejections early and then more rejections & their acceptances late feb/march. However that's just my guess! If they are giving out acceptances in the next week though, that's great (well, as long as we're amongst those with good news:) I'll let you know when I hear something. Good luck & fingers crossed!
Timothy Vallier Posted February 6, 2010 Author Posted February 6, 2010 For Yale at the PhD level you will either be rejected outright, or invited to take their once yearly entrance exam. You must pass this to be admitted. FYI of the six composers invited last year to take this exam ALL of them failed and therefore none were admitted.

Thanks for your info, Timothy, Do you know if that is true for PhD in Music Theory/History as well? Or are you talking about the Composition track only?
Timothy Vallier Posted February 6, 2010 Author Posted February 6, 2010 It's for all phd applicants. But the stats I mentioned about last years group only applied to composition.

Timothy Vallier Posted February 6, 2010 Author Posted February 6, 2010 (edited) I met with one of the composition faculty this past summer and they told me. Edited February 6, 2010 by Timothy Vallier
Timothy Vallier Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 (edited) I contacted Duke and was told that while I was not on the short list, no one has been rejected/accepted yet. Any thoughts on what this means? Edited February 10, 2010 by Timothy Vallier
Timothy Vallier Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 Official no thank you from Northwestern. Bummer about that. Have you by any chance heard as much as an e-mail from temple of stony brook?
Soclose Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Bummer about that. Have you by any chance heard as much as an e-mail from temple of stony brook? Thanks. I haven't heard from either Temple of Stony Brook, although a friend of mine received a call this past weekend from a professor at Temple stating they were considering him for full funding, pending the results of a test he has to take.
