Hi everyone,

Like the title says, I am a bit lost. After two months in agony, I finally got accepted to the program I applied to. I just received an email from the director of the program who will also be my adviser. However, I have not received anything from the admission office-like an official letter. I called the admission office, and I was told that as long as I was admitted by the department I should be fine (I can see all that info on my portal). Do all school send out letter, coming from admission? Also, who will let me know when to register, financial aid, orientation? Do I have to find that on my own?I feel weird emailing the director for every question that he might not know the answer.

Let me clarify that I am miles away from the school and might not have the time to go until few weeks prior the beginning of classes. How will be the best way or time to look for an apt while you are out of state?

All replies would be appreciated.

Thank you

The email you got should be all you need, congratulations on your acceptance. I don't think I ever got an official letter from graduate admissions, though at some point there was an actual letter from my department with something about funding which I needed for my visa. You could ask for something in writing if it would make you feel better; sometimes it's useful to have during apartment-hunting, to be able to show potential landlords that you will have a steady income (assuming that you will be funded). If you haven't received any funding information, that is something that you can most definitely ask about. Either your advisor will know the answer or s/he will be able to tell you who to ask. Or, if your acceptance came from a DGS or chair-type person, ask them. As for registration and orientation, you could ask the grad admin person for your department or the DGS (or your advisor, but advisors have a way of not knowing these details too well). I'd also try looking online to see if you can find a graduate student handbook, which will usually answer questions about routine procedures and student progress in your department.

Great!! Thank you so much for replaying. This really help and I feel much better knowing that I am not an isolated case :). Yes, called financial aid and housing. They were very helpful. I think that since I am far away, doing all the calls during my lunch break plus it is a place I've never been, make me anxious. Thanks again.
