Hello, Can someone help me with this QC question

Question

Posted

Hi There, the quantitative comparison question is as follows:

             X^2 = XY

Quantity A         Quantity B
     |X|                       |Y|

I believe that X=Y and therefore the answer choice is C, both quantities are equal.
But the solution from a test prep material says it's D.
It would be great if someone can help me solve this. Thanks in advance eagerness.png

Hello there. This site is not here to help students solve homework problems. If this is not that, it would help to explain what this is. (Is it GRE prep? if so, posting in the GRE forum would be a good idea.)

It is definitely D, it's easier to solve if you plug in numbers, especially plugging in 0 makes it obvious:

If X=1 and Y=1, then 1^2 = (1)(1) so C.

But if X=0, then 0^2 = (0)(Y) where Y could be literally any number. Therefore you do not know which absolute value of X or Y is larger and the answer is therefore D.
