Sairaj Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Please grade and give feedback on my essay response for a "GRE Analyse an Issue task". Your help is deeply appreciated. Analyse an Issue task: Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. My essay response to the task: I disagree with the proposition that Educational Institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study which they are unlikely to succeed to a certain extent although not completely. Let me address my reasons in the subsequent paragraphs. The first and important bone of contention for this proposition is that how the university is going to decide that a particular student lacks the ability to succeed in a particular field of study? Let's say the university uses the grades, marks or any other parameter of performance from the past history of the student. While this may sound a good thing to do at the very concept or idea of it but there may be some students who weren't good in their field in the past but are really willing to work hard in the present and in the future. So I think this may turn a difficult task for a university to completely refuse or eliminate a student who has not performed really well in the past. The other idea that stops me from agreeing to the said proposition is the question "Isn't it against the freedom of choice of a student to stop him/her from pursuing a field of one's Interest because a University feels he/she cannot perform well?" As stated in the beginning that there is not a complete disagreement because If a student has low scores on all parameters of performance in the past and shows no interest whatsoever to the chosen field of study then it is logical and just for a university to refuse that particular student's choice of study. I conclude that a method where the university not only looks at the past performance but also estimates the student's interest towards the chosen field of study before it decides to refuse or not refuse a student's choice.
