Type of Student: International Asian Female

Courses and Background:

  • Undergrad level: Calculus 1-3, Differential Equation, Abstract Algebra, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis 1, Discrete Math, Combinatorics, Stochastic Calculus, Discrete-Time and Continuous-Time Finance, Mathematical Statistics and Inference, Modern Regression, Advanced Statistical Methods, Data Mining, Operations Research I & II, Numerical Methods, Operations Management, Supply-chain management, Mathematical Models,

Research Experience

  • An Operations Research project on optimizing the tutoring schedule at CMU
  • Research Assistant for a project in operations research and statistics

Other Relevant Experience

  • Grader for Differential Equations and Proof-based math

Honor: Dean's list, with High Honors

Letter of Recommendation: I'm still working on this part

  • The professor that I took OR and  did the project with
  • The professor that I took combinatorics and algebraic structure with
  • Advisor

Thinking about applying for:

  • MIT
  • Upenn
  • Stanford
  • Berkeley
  • Chicago
  • Princeton ORFE
  • Lehigh
  • UMich
  • Ohio State
  • Columbia
  • CMU ACO/OR

I'm afraid that this list is too front-heavy, and I'm not sure whether I should apply to masters first. Thank you for your advice!!!

You'd probably be better off asking your OR professors at CMU. Most of the posters here are from statistics/biostatistics. You also might to want to go back through the old posts on this forum to see if there were people with similar profiles applying to OR programs, though from what I can see there's never been a large OR presence on grad cafe.

Chicago doesn't have a PhD in Operations Research. There is an operations management group in the business school but there is not OR department. OR departments are found at schools with engineering.
