melusine Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 How do you know when you're obsessing (way) too much about admissions results? When your subconsciousness starts interiorising perfectly innocent pieces of music as a privately significant soundtrack to your own particular little angst-ridden psyche... As an example- today, I had the transcendental experience of said psyche talking to me through the medium of Ben Lee's song "Begin": "Walking through Central Park I'm in a foriegn country and I'm waiting for a sign That it's ok for you to care Cause I'm not going anywhere And while you wonder if you should let me in I only want it to begin" yep. I am officially going insane. melusine 1
BlueSwedeShoes Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Aw, I came here hoping to find the ultimate waiting-to-hear-back-from-Grad-school playlist.
rogue Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Aw, I came here hoping to find the ultimate waiting-to-hear-back-from-Grad-school playlist. Me too! Right now I'm listening to a lot of house music (my usual), with occasional breaks for punk and ska stuff when I'm feeling particularly angsty about all the waiting. Oh, and I've been known to listen to a remix of Pink's "So What" ten times in a row lately... it might be a break up song, but it's good for when I think about the possibility of across the board rejections. "So what? I'm still a rock star!" Sigh...
Sparky Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Okay, here's one for the playlist: "O Fortuna" (the one that everyone thinks of when they think of the Carmina Burana) Translation: O Fortune, like the moon of ever changing state, Always waxing and waning Hateful life now is brutal, Now pampers us with its game Poverty, Power, It melts them like ice. Fate, savage and empty You are a turning wheel Your position is uncertain Your favor is untrustworthy, always likely to disappear Obscured in shadows and veiled you bear upon me too Now my back is naked through the sport of your wickedness. The chance of prosperity And of virtue Is not now mine Whether willing or not, A man is always liable for Fortune's service. At this hour Without delay. Touch the strings! Because through luck she lays low the brave, everyone lament with me! -- See? So perfect.
melusine Posted January 21, 2010 Author Posted January 21, 2010 Aw, I came here hoping to find the ultimate waiting-to-hear-back-from-Grad-school playlist. Well that really was the thread's original intent.. Consider Ben Lee's song my entry to the playlist. You don't expect me to do *all* the work, do ya?
Cicero Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Sitting, Waiting, Wishing by Jack Johnson should be on the list. The title is appropriate I think.
jordy Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 (edited) Here's a good "feeling-happy-and-pensive-about-being-admitted-and-moving-on-to-the-next-stage-of-your-life" song for your listening pleasure when the time comes (good sound too, though you may recognize it from an M&Ms commercial circa 2007, and I'd just like to add that said commercial is *not* how I discovered it lol) "This is the Day" - The The (Album: Soul Mining) Well you didn't wake up this morning cause you didn't go to bed You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red The calendar on your wall is ticking the days off You've been reading some old letters -- You smile and think how much you've changed All the money in the world Couldn't buy back those days You pull back the curtains, and the sun burns into your eyes You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change THIS IS THE DAY -- When things fall into place You could've done anything if you'd wanted And all your friends and family think that you're lucky But the side of you they'll never see Is when you're left alone with the memories That hold your life together like glue You pull back the curtains, and the sun burns into your eyes You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change THIS IS THE DAY -- When things fall into place Edited January 21, 2010 by jordy
gildedProgressive Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 What I thought of when I first looked at this thread is obvious, but it works: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, "The Waiting." 'Cause, well, it IS the hardest part.
BlueSwedeShoes Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Ok, I'll contribute! "Que Sera, Sera" - Doris Day (Good oldie) "Everything's Alright" - Jesus Christ Superstar (I guess Judas part would be your inner "nag" that's telling you that you just wasted a lot of money on grad school applications...) "There's Life Outside Your Apartment" - Avenue Q "I'm Calm" - A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum "Take a Chance on Me" - ABBA "Professional Pirate" - Muppets Treasue Island "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" - Green Day "Are We the Waiting" - Green Day "I'm All Alone" - Spamalot "I'm Gonna Be" - The Proclaimers (Bonus point of you sing this on your visiting day to your potential advisor!) "Totally Fucked" - Spring Awakening "I'm a Believer" - The Monkees (Just to get something happy in here!) "The Impossible Dream" - Man of La Mancha "This is Your Life" - Dropkick Murphys "Is Anybody There" - 1776 (for everyone that's dealing with silence!) "Cheer Up!" - Reel Big Fish "Don't Stop Me Now" - Queen "I'm Going Slightly Mad" - Queen "Where Do I Go?" - Hair "I'd Kill to Fall Asleep" - New Found Glory "It's Five O'clock Somewhere" - Jimmy Buffet "Everything is Alright" - Motion City Soundtrack "Don't Stop Believin'" - Journey "Everything's Still Fine" - Volbeat "Destination Unknown" - Top Gun ...that ended up longer than I thought. And just about as roller-coast-y as my mood.

In all situations, let us consider The Boss... "Badlands" Lights out tonight, trouble in the heartland. Got a head-on collision, smashin in my guts man. I'm caught in a crossfire that I don't understand. But there's one thing I know for sure girl: I don't give a damn for the same old played out scenes Baby I don't give a damn for just the in-betweens. Honey I want the heart, I want the soul, I want control right now. You better listen to me baby: Talk about a dream; try to make it real. You wake up in the night with a fear so real. You spend your life waiting for a moment that just don't come. Well don't waste your time waiting Badlands... you gotta live it every day Let the broken hearts stand As the price you've gotta pay Keep pushin till its understood And these badlands start treating us good Workin in the field till you get your back burned Workin 'neath the wheels till you get your facts learned. Baby I got my facts learned real good right now. You better get it straight darling: Poor men wanna be rich, rich men wanna be kings, And a king ain't satisfied till he rules everything. I wanna go out tonight, I wanna find out what I got. Well I believe in the love that you gave me. I believe in the faith that could save me. I believe in the hope and I pray that some day it May raise me above these Badlands... you gotta live it every day Let the broken hearts stand As the price youve gotta pay Keep pushin till its understood And these badlands start treating us good For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside That it ain't no sin to be glad youre alive. I wanna find one face that aint looking through me I wanna find one place, I wanna spit in the face of these Badlands... you gotta live it every day Let the broken hearts stand As the price youve gotta pay Keep movin till its understood And these badlands start treating us good But seriously, can they let us know already?!

growing19 Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Waylance, I love your Broadway selections! Throughout this whole process, I've been listening to "Voice of Truth" by Casting Crowns and "What Faith Can Do" by Kutless. Yeah, they're Christian groups Scoff if you will, but I promise you will feel empowered just by listening!

I always kind of assumed I was the last person on earth to listen to JC Superstar and Hair. Comforting to know there's others out there too! Btw- random Broadway trivia of the day: Did you know that Diane Keaton played Sheila in the very first Broadway Hair production? (yes, I'm probably the last person on earth to have bought the actual CD-rom and booklet )
growing19 Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 No way! Diane Keaton is fabulous. (This very moment, I'm looking online for tickets to Hair. I promised my friend in NY that we'd see it as soon as my applications were finished.)
Serric Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 One of my favorite artists is a deceased J-pop singer named Hide (pronounced "Hee Deh"). He has some great songs (such as Ever Free), and this one, Misery. I translated it a while back just for the hell of it, but I figure this is a good song for those who are a bit depressed in the middle of admissions right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEESkC2l8rc Hallelujah, the miserable, do you wanna show me how low and low? Hallelujah, the miserable, do you wanna show me how low and low, say hallelujah; Your pain happily unfolds its wings and dances down, the daylight taking your wounds and, gently, opens them; Hallelujah, the miserable, if you can hear the stars cry... hallelujah, the miserable, they're only tiny things, say hallelujah; If you sink into the darkness of night, you'll forget your shaking feelings, your swaying dreams, the small violences Count the falling stars, and you'll be tired of crying, as the blue moon smiles and closes your wounds. Stay free my misery, and I'll gather the falling sadness in my arms Kiss your misery, and I'll dance, until I can take everything as it is Stay free my misery, stay free my misery Stay free my misery Stay free my misery, if this exploding pain is only a passing wind Stay free my misery, then let's wait for a sunny day with rain, and I'll take your tears. If you say you're sad, it's the color of the sky and you'll cry over your inability to reach But the dreams that surround your small body will swallow the pain and you'll be radiant. Stay free my misery, if you reach your hands out you can feel it Stay free my misery; the love, the pain, you can take it all Stay free my misery, and I'll gather the falling sadness in my arms Kiss your misery, and I'll dance, until you can take it all Take in everything...and under this sky, you'll smile. Hallelujah, the miserable, I wanna show you how low and low, Hallelujah, the miserable, do you wanna show me how low and low? Hallelujah, the miserable, I wanna show you how low and low, Hallelujah, the miserable, do you wanna show me how low and low? Say hallelujah.
lurkingnomad Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Another Broadway fan here...Waylance, lol your list is soooo perfect Reminded me of... How do I go back to college? I don't know who I am anymore! I wanna go back to my room and find a message in dry-erase pen on the door! Ohhh... I wish I could just drop a class... Or get into a play... Or change my major... Or f*** my T.A. I need an academic advisor to point the way! We could be... Sitting in the computer lab, 4 A.M. before the final paper is due, Cursing the world 'cause I didn't start sooner, And seeing the rest of the class there, too! I wish I could go back to college! How do I go back to college?! AHHHH... (also from Avenue Q)

Kutless is also good, but I find myself more drawn to Meredith Andrews or even a little Caedmon's Call lately. Glad to see I'm not alone in loving this kind of uplifting music as we're stuck within the waiting game!
