TheatreGrad Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 (edited) Hi all, so I was very happy to get a letter from the English department saying I was recommended for admission (Yay!) and that my application proceeds to the graduate school of the institution for "final approval". I triple checked that I meet all the requirements of the graduate school (I do), but I'm anxious about an issue. I walked at commencement in December and fully planned on graduating (officially) then, however there was an issue with that which caused me to not "officially" graduate at that time. I put on my application for grad school that I would be graduating in December, and at the time that was what I had planned. Does this mean I "lied" on my application and would this be a problem with the graduate school? Is there a way to call the grad school to let them know about this or something? The issue is being fixed and I'm waiting that out right now. I'm sorry if this is a dumb question or silly of me. I just wanted to ask. Thanks in advance! fuzzylogician Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Congrats! You should be perfectly fine. You didn't lie on your application, you gave the truth based on your knowledge at the time. I would strongly suggest waiting this out, it shouldn't take more than a few days.

So this is hear-say, and perhaps fuzzylogician can correct me if I am passing false information (fuzzylogician was very helpful in answering this very question). From what I've heard, some schools take the department's recommendation, and then ranks the applicants. Then, the graduate school determines how many students will be admitted to the department in total. If that total number is outnumbered by the recommended applicants, then they will go down the ranking list. For example, if the dept recommends 10 applicants, but the graduate school determines 8 people will be admitted for that dept, then applicants ranked 9 and 10 will be dropped. This doesn't directly respond to your specific concern, but I thought it relevant to post. Hoping I'm wrong, because I too have been recommended or admission
fuzzylogician Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 I've never heard of this happening. Which doesn't mean it doesn't, but I've been around these fora for almost a decade now, so it's at least not a frequent occurrence. Also, as things go, not something worth losing sleep over, because there is exactly nothing you can do to control it. You just have to wait this one out. seung 1
