University of Houston leveling program

Has anyone done the UH post-bacc or know much about it? I applied and am waiting to hear back. I went to UH for undergrad and majored in psychology and now I'm an assistant teacher at a preschool for kids with developmental disabilities. I don't really know how competitive the post-bacc program is but I'm hoping I have a good shot- my GRE is V: 168, Q: 157, writing 4.5 and my GPA is 3.4. I went to the information session and the faculty there were really encouraging and laid back so I'm really hoping I get in!

Hello! I know some others who have done the post-bacc program, but I don't know much about their academic background. I did apply to the graduate program, and based on that I think your stats look good. If you do get in I would work really hard in your classes to get straight A's to get your GPA up a bit, because admission to the post-bacc program does not guarantee admission into the grad program. I did meet some applicants who did the post-bacc but did not get into the grad program.

If you don't get in and want to try again I would suggest volunteering at the Houston Aphasia Recovery Center. Dr. Maher is affiliated with HARC, and I hear that many applicants who volunteer there do get admitted. It's also a rewarding and wonderful experience. I have been volunteering there for quite some time and I have learned so much, and it's really boosted my confidence for working with adults.

Thanks so much for the information! The Houston Aphasia Recovery Center sounds great. I have a ton of experience with kids but basically none with adults so that would be great to get that experience. What have you done there as a volunteer? 

I agree about getting my GPA up with the post-bacc, I calculated it and if I get all A's in the post-bacc my overall GPA would be 3.5 by the time I apply so that would be better. And my last 60 hours would be 3.9 so hopefully they put some emphasis on the last 60 hours.

Sorry for the super slow response! HARC is really interesting because it's run by SLPs but it's not "therapy". They have group sessions (conversation groups, book clubs, music, art, etc.) and the volunteers are there to assist the participants and SLPs. The main thing is helping the participants communicate. Occasionally they ask for admin help, but not very often. You observe for 3 days before you start volunteering so you will get the hang of it. 

Also I had a low cumulative GPA (3.22) and I got in! So don't let that discourage you! I think your high verbal score will definitely help too. Good luck!

Thanks for your response, I found out on Wednesday that I got in!

It said on the HARC website that you need to commit to volunteering once a week for a year- do you know if they're really strict about that? I'm asking because I don't know what time my classes will be and the center is open during pretty limited hours so I don't know if I could make it mesh with my schedule for a whole year. 

So are you doing the UH post-bacc now or did you apply there but go elsewhere?

Congratulations! HARC is not really strict on that. Most of their volunteers are students, and many of them will be there one semester and leave the next because they don't have the availability with their new class schedule. It also gets really quiet around HARC during finals, because many volunteers are too busy to come in. 

I just got my acceptance to UH's grad program last week! I'm still waiting on a couple other schools, but more than likely I will end up at UH :-)

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely look into volunteering there. And that's great, congratulations! Their grad program is one of my top choices for when I apply next year.
