Serric Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I figure that, since we've all been stressing out so long about applications and acceptances, it's going to be a little difficult coming down off of that adrenaline high. So, I made this thread to complain/rant/etc. about stuff that comes after! For example, moving. Cross-country moves (I'll be going from San Francisco, CA to Ann Arbor, MI) are a pain in the BUTT.

Try cross-Atlantic moves. No fun. You can't rent a truck to bring your stuff over. You either have to send everything via ship (=takes 2-3 months) or via plane (=costs a fortune), or buy everything new (=used, or ikea). Either way you have stuff still missing months after the move. ::sigh::

My wife threw out my trumpet because we didn't have enough space for essentials Two bags..that's all you're allowed!
fuzzylogician Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Two bags..that's all you're allowed! Same here. I basically moved to the States with one suitcase and one duffel-bag. That's about 35kg worth of possessions. I gave away everything else to family members - furniture, kitchenware, paintings, linen, some clothes, etc. It wasn't worth it to store or to ship those items, so whatever didn't fit in my old room at my parents' house had to go.

Genomic Repairman Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 When I moved 1200 miles for my Ph.D. program I rented a Uhaul trailer and towed it behind my Jeep. Halfway through the trip, the axle on the trailer broke, almost causing me to smash end to a bus load of divinity students surely condemn me to damnation for all eternity. Uhaul brought out a new trailer but made me unload and load my stuff into the new one by myself in the 110 degree heat on the side of the interstate. Roadside assistance my ass.
