Both in the forum and in the results for linguistics. I am still anxiously waiting to hear from my top choice, which in previous years would've made decisions by the end of last week, but I suppose budget problems don't help any. I am seriously regretting missing the deadline on every independent source of funding... : /

I feel the same way about funding. I applied to schools that offered funding without thinking of my admissions chances... but there is no point rehashing prior mistakes.

It is almost February 11th, and hardly any of us have heard from programs. I'm not sure if that is a really good sign for us or something more sinister. This week to the end of next week seems like the window for most of my programs, though.

Have you heard from any of yours yet, Pangor?

Yeah... well, there's always next year, but if I don't get in somewhere with funding this year, my options are not very attractive.

All I've heard so far was the yes from Chapel Hill and a no from Berkeley. Some of the others have started doing interviews or acceptances, so I assume I'm out there.

Yea, the whole funding issue sure is a pain. I only applied to schools that give funding for sure, but I assume that also hinders my acceptance chances.

You could always go to one without funding for a year and then apply for grants once in? Or transfer to a program that offers funding.

I saw all of those Berkley reports coming in and was sort of upset that I ended up not applying there, because at least I would know by now! haha

I've already done two unfunded MAs, so taking out more loans would be a bad idea at this point. My only options if I don't get funding somewhere are staying where I am, where I could probably get a TA/RA-ship, or dropping out, getting a job, and applying for funding & programs yet again next year. And neither really appeals. *sigh*

Congratulations, pangor-ban!

I'm curious -- who emailed you? I thought Irene Heim was going to call admitted applicants.

Thank you everyone for the congratulations. :)

I got an email from Irene Heim. I dunno if maybe my phone was busy or off or something?

*cough* Although at least hearing she was going to be the one to notify admitted students makes me feel somewhat more certain that it's not just some cruel mistake...

Don't give up hope just yet. There are the possibilities that a)they haven't made all the decisions yet, b)they haven't gotten around to notifying everyone yet, or c)there is an unofficial waitlist (I don't really know).

Really, you only know you're out when you get a notification saying so.

Yeah, I think mine is the only acceptance posted so far, and they have probably more coming. And who would sit on this kind of news, eh?

You must have been quite impressive Pangor. If you don't mind me asking, what were your stats and area you applied for? Phonology?

My stats are kind of weird, which I think is why my acceptances have been unpredictable. I think it probably helped that I took LSA courses at Berkeley with my two POIs from MIT, and asked them for quite a bit of advice on problems outside of class, so they remember me.

BA: East Asian Languages and Cultures, from a good school. 3.0 GPA (I... was not a good student.)

(4 years out, working as a Japanese translator of novels/comics, teaching English in France, some other less interesting stuff.)

MA: Irish, from a good school in the UK, equivalent of a 3.9~4.0 GPA, thesis was using linguistic evidence to date some ancient inscriptions

MA: Linguistics, from my local university, 4.0 GPA, my writing sample/thesis-to-be is on stress/prosody in Old Irish verbs, will finish in May.

GRE is... good enough to make pretty much any cut-off, but not especially impressive.

I expressed interest in phonology/morphology of the Celtic languages, and that having Harvard (and its Celtic department) nearby would be a huge help to my research.

You know, it really has been (Pangor ban's good news aside) a pretty lackluster week in terms of forum posts and result data bank entries. Only a few trickle in each day. Maybe this is the week when a lot of schools are finalizing decisions. If that's true we might be getting some emails towards the end of the day today or Monday morning. One can only hope. It is February 12th, after all.

UPenn was supposed to make its final decisions today, but I don't know if they have sent out any notifications yet.

I know one person whose gotten an offer from UMass for next year, so it seems like they're sending out the positive news, now.

(I'm a first-year there with no knowledge of what goes on in admissions :) )

MIT has sent out notifications to all admitted and wait-listed applicants. We will have an Open House event on March 8-9. If you haven't heard yet, I'm afraid the news isn't good.

Good luck with the rest of your decisions!

Phew, that's actually good to know :) My first choices were UConn (where I feel I'd be a great fit) and MIT (prestige, of course, plus I really did like Prof. Pesetsky when I had the pleasure of attending a lecture of his). Since I've already been accepted to UConn, I no longer have any dilemma as to where I'll go to grad school.

Hi dant.gwyrdd, are you interested in Welsh, by chance?
