NO8DO Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 It seems that we are a minority among other disciplines. Is anyone else applying to programs in any foreign language, if so which ones? research interests, etc.? I'm mostly interested in Spanish Hagiographic manuscripts (particularly the Codex Calixtinus/Liber Sancti Jacobi) and Mystic Literature (Santa Teresa, San Juan de la Cruz), as well as influences from other Romance languages (French and Italian), Arabic, and English on Iberian and Latin American Literary production.
tarotax Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Hi! Finally, someone who is studying Spanish! personally, I am applying for doctoral programs in Spanish literature...my areas of specialization deal with XX century Latin American literature (gender studies, jewish lit. in lat am.....) If i can ask, where are you applying?
NO8DO Posted January 11, 2008 Author Posted January 11, 2008 Always good to find a fellow hispanist! I have applied to UPenn (PhD), University of Delaware (MA, Spanish&French), NYU in Madrid (MA), and will be applying within the next month to West Chester Uni of PA (MA) and SLU in Madrid (MA) as safer schools. How about you?
Minnesotan Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Hispanist? You just made that word up. Admit it!
NO8DO Posted January 12, 2008 Author Posted January 12, 2008 Believe it or not it's one of those acceptable 'made up words' that professors/scholars use - for example when I asked my advisor about scholars in the field of [spanish History]/Hispanic Studies (for my own reference in the grad school search), she asked her friend, a hispanist in the field [of history]. I'm sure every field has these kinds of words, haha, this is just one of ours! This is what I found when I typed it into google: "n. A specialist in Spanish language or literature or in the languages and literatures of Spain, Portugal, and Latin America." It's not that its used often, its just one of those things a prof lets roll of their tongue like, "Oh I actually studied under Helen Nader, she recently retired but she was a very prominent hispanist in her day."
NO8DO Posted February 5, 2008 Author Posted February 5, 2008 So who are these mystery French PhD acceptances coming from? haha Must be someone just posting on the results part, congrats whoever it is! I unfortunately have to wait until end of month at the earliest, but most likely first two weeks of march, which is much too late in my opinion, haha.
