Kezion Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 QUESTION: Some people believe that teaching morality should be the foundation of education. Others believe that teaching a foundation of logical reasoning would do more to produce a moral society. Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented above. ANSWER: In the modern world, where efficiency is given utmost importance, sometimes even over health, it is essential to form a foundation of moral values in children along side a sound logical mind. The greatest indicator of a moral society is how people tend to help each other. Leaders that care about people they are leading are the example of a moral foundation. If a manager of a production company values logical reasoning above morality, he will fire under-performing employees when there is a deficit in the balance sheet. However, a manager that values morality, will try to find out why the employees are not performing, and will help them to perform better and meet their targets. He would value the livelihood of his people over the loss of the company. In the long run, this will produce a more effective corporation, where employees have developed the efficacy for their job over time and with the help of their leaders. In a moral society, personal gains are secondary when coming at the expense of others. The primary goal is evolution of the society as a whole. A moral person who is running late for work, when sees a blind man trying to cross a road, will help the blind man. On the other hand, if the person was to be governed by pure logic, he would prioritize getting to work on time over helping the blind man. Ultimately a moral society is a society where kindness trumps selfishness. It is stated that some believe that a foundation of logical reasoning would be better to produce a moral society. The claim can be supported by the fact that when faced with a crisis, sound logical reasoning would serve better at solving the problem at hand. This phenomenon can be observed in a crisis on an airplane. Before every flight, the captain and attendants remind the passengers that in case the oxygen masks are dropped, every passenger should secure their own masks before helping anyone else. If the cabin needs to be depressurized due to some fault, and passengers start helping each other, they would probably pass out due to lack of oxygen. This shows that a sound logical reasoning foundation may save lives. Teaching morality should definitely form the foundation of education, but logical reasoning is an essential skill that should be developed alongside it.
