  1. Hey all, Does anyone here know of schools with later application deadlines? I know that the majority of schools close their deadlines in the next week or two, but if anyone has research about schools that have deadlines in March, I would greatly appreciate it!
  2. I agree with the above. I got the Magoosh GRE Online Prep course, and it was absolutely fantastic for the quant. Every practice question comes with a video answer explanation, which was incredibly helpful in figuring out my mistakes. It would be especially good for a nontraditional student because it gets you used to answering questions on a computer with scratch paper like you will have to do during the actual GRE. Good luck!
  3. I've had such a hard time narrowing down my list... my loose requirements are: the college is near a major airport, the program accepts my post-bacc classes (I'm only taking 7 through the university of Hawaii), and the city is somewhat fun for a 24 year old. Since I'm willing to move around the country, there are so many options! Any ideas on other places I should apply, or if I should take some of the schools below out of my list???
  4. Hey guys, I figured I'd finally get it on this thread! I have been back and forth about applying to graduate schools for the Fall 2016 season- fulltime teaching has made it incredibly difficult to get all of my application details together. Buttt... I just took the GRE last night and got a 163 verbal and 157 quant!!! I was not expecting to score that high, so I finally have the motivation to finish my SOP and start applications. How long did it take y'all to get your applications together? I'm applying to 13 schools I believe, but only UT Austin has a deadline of 12/15.
  5. I'd be nervous about the school losing accreditation before/during/after we would go through the program- I'm not sure what that would mean about our degrees and job prospects.
  6. Here's what ASHA said in their official report: http://www.asha.org/uploadedFiles/Accreditation-Approval-Status-UA-Fayetteville-SLP.pdf It doesn't look too serious, but I'm hesitant to apply to a program on probation for any reason!
  7. Are there any other SLP hopefuls out there who are more interested in the school-side of SLP? While I look forward to experiencing the different work settings in a program, I'm ultimately hoping for a school placement afterwards. I'd also like to work with the middle/high school age children, although I know those placements are difficult to get. What programs are more school-focused?
  8. Hey all, I saw the thread for an easy chem class online, and I thought I'd ask if anyone had recommendations for a relatively easy biology class! I'm teaching fulltime next year and taking 6 post-bacc classes in the fall and the spring, so I'm afraid of overloading myself by also taking a bio class at my local community college. Has anybody had good experiences or any recommendations for a biology class?
  9. This may be a bit.. piddling, but after selling my soul for my career and sacrificing my personal happiness for the last few years, I'm looking to find a graduate school that is in an interesting environment. I'm in my mid-twenties and love the beach, the outdoors, and food. I love California, but I'm from the east coast and I know the schools are very competitive for out-of-staters. Do you folks have any recommendations for graduate schools in livable towns? Conversely, do you know of any schools where the outside life is less dynamic? Any and all comments are appreciated!
  10. Hi Magpie, This definitely helped me; thank you so much for your thoughtful response! I definitely hope that my ESL teaching skills transfer over, and I'm excited to delve more into the scientific aspect of communication rather than just teaching grammar and pronunciation. Would you say that working full-time while taking the prereqs was stressful? I don't know if I'm going to be able to handle it or not, but my plan is to take a 7-class online prerequisite program with the University of Hawaii as well as teaching full-time at my boarding school. I'm taking one class during the summer and doing 3 weeks of summer school, so hopefully it'll be a good litmus test to my fall and spring of taking 3 classes and teaching. I'm also nervous about observation hours, but I'll hopefully figure that out when I need to. I want to start my new career as soon as possible! I hope your first year of grad school is successful
  11. Thank you for your reply! This is also something I was wondering about-- I have to say, having the summers free to do what I want (which actually results in either teaching summer school or PD courses) is definitely a huge perk to the teaching life. What are summers mostly like for SLPs in schools? Is it the same work as the regular school year, but a lighter caseload?
  12. Hey all, I'm currently an ESL teacher at a private high school, and although I do love it, I'm already experiencing teacher burnout. I love actually being in the classroom with the kids, but the extra responsibilities (lesson plans, departments meetings, coaching, dorm duties) are making the job much less enjoyable and completely overloading me. I was wondering if there are any other teacher-to-SLP people out there that would be able to answer a few questions. Why did you choose to change to SLP, and what was your process like? Are there any similarities or differences that are especially notable? And, most importantly, are you happy with your decision?
  13. Hey all, I'm finally taking the plunge and doing my year of post-bacc classes before trying for a masters program! I'm really interested in doing my prereqs online at the University of Hawaii- Manoa outreach college, but I haven't seen a lot of information about it on any online forums. Has anybody heard of or taken these classes, and would you recommend them? Otherwise, I'll probably go the normal route of USU's second bachelors. Here's the website for the program-- if there are any experienced SLP applicants who could look over the class list and give me advice, I'd be very appreciative! http://manoa.hawaii.edu/csd/pcp/
