  1. Quick question: are research grantees supposed to start buying tickets now? I haven't heard anything about this yet, not really sure when we're supposed to do it.
  2. Janet Upton and Ji Yingnan (IIE Beijing) said they would be in contact with alternates to let them know how alternate status affects affiliation dates, so I would follow up with them if you don't hear from them soon.
  3. China people: I believe CLEA acceptances were just sent out. Check your email.
  4. I got an email from IIE Beijing late last night asking me to confirm my interest in the award. Jonathan Akeley told me last week that we won't know anything for a couple of weeks, so there's still some waiting left.
  5. If this is true, I think it will depend from grant to grant. This is what it says about it in the additional info sent to China grantees:
  6. I have a suggestion: edit the first post to include a link to the 2011-2012 spreadsheet and the 2011-2012 thread. Both of those resources have a lot of useful information, might as well put it at the top.
  7. So no one heard back about the CLEA yet? I didn't receive anything in the manila envelope about it, so I'm not sure what's going on with that yet.
  8. I'm in Michigan and I received my China acceptance today. Good luck to those still waiting! Here's info for the spreadsheet: name: computerdating country: China region: East Asia & Pacific grant: Full interview: N status: Accepted address: Permanent notification: 5/3/2012 postmark: 4/29/2012 method: Manilla envelope academic status: Undergrad research area: Modern History/Rural Development contact info: please message user "computerdating" at the gradcafe forums area: Beijing/Hebei countryside
  9. Hey, I think you should really try to get some more information out of your advisor or from IIE. Every country seems to have follow-up things that are specific to the country. My country's IIE has been emailing with requests for additional information. I've had to write two additional things and send them out already. So maybe another Italy applicant can help you figure out what the next steps are.
  10. Any other China finalists lurking in this thread? I received an email today from IIE about confirming affiliation and submitting a research plan. In one of the attached documents, it says that all China people will be required to pay tuition at their universities. Fulbright will either give you a tuition waiver or reimburse you for costs. If there are any other China people in this thread, send me a PM to discuss this (I'm concerned about paying out of pocket, wonder if I can get a loan to do so) or if you want to talk about the email from IIE.
  11. Hey guys, I'm a little bit confused about what it means to make it past the first round. Is the NSC considered to be the more rigorous of the two, or can we expect a similar or higher level or scrutiny from the host country review? I ask because for my country, the Fulbright website said that it prefers if applicants do not affiliate with universities in X or Y city and (I believe as a general rule) if applicants have not already lived in the host country for over six months. My research will not take place in X/Y city, but my university affiliation is in one of those cities and I have previously lived in the country for over six months. Fulbright said it would need serious justification for why projects need to be in X or Y city and I tried to provide that in my application. So now that I'm past the first round, is it possible to be eliminated on those grounds? I'm not sure if anyone can answer these questions, and I guess it doesn't matter in the long run, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. I am not sure if any other countries have preferences like that.
  12. Cool, thanks. Does anyone know what the supervising agency actually is?
  13. Cool. I'm not getting excited yet, but that is good to know. I applied for a research grant to China, so last year there were 230ish people who applied and 70 grants available. It's not specified if that 230 is pre- or post- January, but most likely pre-January as only 1.5x - 2x the number of grants are recommended.
  14. Hi, I'm a finalist as well. I have a question about the next phase. As I understand it, our applications are now being sent to our host countries for approval. If the number of approved grants exceeds the number of available grants, additional cuts will be made by FSB. Is this correct?
