inappropriate to ask how much the deposit costs?

The program's been taking a while to send out our Enrollment Confirmation Deposit forms. It was supposed to come a week after accepting the offer (which would have been 2 weeks ago), but there was a delay. I want to know how much it will be because I have to start planning ahead for how I'll pay rent next month and how I'll save up enough to move to grad school in time. Is it inappropriate or awkward to email the department and ask them how much the deposit is?

I wouldn't think so, as long as you're polite.  Your rationale of wanting to plan your budget for next month is perfectly reasonable.  Worst case scenario, you won't get a response.  But hopefully they will reply and at least give you a ballpark estimate.
