  1. Thank you so much; that makes me feel a lot better. I just needed someone else to spell it out for me. Thank you, I will do just that when I go to class tomorrow.
  2. This doesn't fit into Classics 100%, but as I am Classically-inclined in my studies, I want to post this question here. How well is UBC perceived in the field of Classics? I actually got accepted in the M.A. program in Ancient Culture, Religion and Ethnicity in the Mediterranean and the Near East. If I go to this program, will it hurt my chances for PhD programs in Classics? I am at the point between deciding between the US school (top 20-ish program) where there is no money for me ($35,000 costs) and UBC (rank?) with guaranteed TAship and a scholarship. I feel pretty lost right now. Help, please?
  3. Wow, you are so lucky! I guess I am not getting in Brown, if people are already interviewing (and I haven't gotten an email...oh well). Good luck!
  4. Congrats you guys! Hey, you know know some of your cohort (if you both go to UCSB)
  5. I thought Michagan was number 3 in the rankings...
  6. Guess this means I am rejected from Michigan. I've noticed that Classics notifications/decisions seem to be on a different timeline than most of the other programs.
  7. Okay, I was under the same impression. One of my applications ended up being for a PhD because I misread the department's page (I thought that they had an MA) and another I changed from an MA to a PhD because I wanted to (the MA didn't ask for a writing sample and I am proud of what I wrote, so I changed the application). As you can see, applying was starting to mess with my judgement skills around mid-January. I am sure you'll get into one of the 15 you applied to--you definitely seem to know what you are doing.
  8. Oh, and a general question for all--are you applying for master's programs or doctoral programs? I did a mix of both, but I feel I should probably stick to a master's program first. Is that what most of you have done/plan to do?
  9. I think it depends on the department and the year--so it can't really be anticipated. 15!!! My old roommate applied to that many (for English) and I didn't realize how intense that would be until I started applying this year. That's a lot of money! I've easily spent half a thousand just applying to 6 programs.
  10. Hi Robert! It's nice to hear from a fellow classist. What do you want to focus on/research? I'm into the comparative literature aspect of the classical tradition (and I'm a Hellenist  ). I have only heard back from one of the six programs to which I applied (an acceptance). Other than that, I have no idea of my status with the other five schools. Where have you seen the acceptances/reports? I've not seen too many myself, beyond a couple UK schools on this board and who_got_in (mainly Oxford). Good luck!
  11. Thanks ammar! Good luck for your applications! I hope you hear back soon.
  12. I've been lurking on this site for some time now and I have to say that this particular thread had me pretty bummed out. I didn't score that high on my GRE and I felt that it somehow meant I was stupid. I got a 640V, 530Q, and a 4.5AW. But you know, the day I took the exam my parents were driving me to the testing center (so I could study in the car and because I get lost easily), when my dad had an allergic reaction and got sick everywhere for the whole one and a half hours to the testing center. This meant my mom had to drive (she absolutely refuses to drive on highways normally) and I was so upset that I got sick and couldn't eat anything at all before the test. But my parents understood how important it was for me to take this test, so they got me there, I took it, and that was my score. I wanted to say that (with that score) I just got accepted the University of Wisconsin-Madison. So you applicants out there with low scores and/or extenuating circumstances, be it testing situations, learning disabilities, etc., you still can make it if you try. And no, I didn't mention a thing in my application about my testing situation. I figured that instead of making excuses (even though my dad ended up being hosptalized for blood-clots as a result, so that's how intense the situation was), they could take or leave me. Thankfully, they took me. So you can do it people! And yes, my father is doing much better now. I love my dad and my mom. They are my dedicated task-force
  13. I just got an email of acceptance from the University of Wisconsin at Madison for a Masters in Classics. It is a total shock, as the deadline was just the 5th of January and I know that the first day of classes for the university was the 22nd of this month. I am a bit worried about funding, but they said it will be discussed on the visitation day (March 31st). I still have five other applications to hear back from, but I am glad that I got an acceptance first. Good luck for everyone else!
