  1. That's probably true, I just don't think professors need or want to hear a lit review of their own work in your initial contact to them. JMO though
  2. For future reference, I graduated from there last may; my stats were 3.24 undergrad gpa, 570 v, 670 q, and my writing score was just atrocious (despite being a decent writer!). The CRP program really looks for diversity and passion more than any other factors. Oh, and they tend to give funding predominately to "diverse" students. But if you need funding, and you ask for it once you get there, you will probably be rewarded. RAs are hard to come by, and TAs are most often given to PhD students, and a select few MS students. But they seem to give waivers away like candy.
  3. I'm in the midst of applications for planning PhDs and am trying to decide whether or not to retake the GREs. My scores were good enough to gain acceptance in a master's program, and I know that my stats were above average when compared to my cohort. But as far as I can tell, none of the schools I'm applying to this go around even mention acceptable GRE scores except Irvine. One of my schools doesn't even use the GRE in evaluating applications. Does anyone have insight on what's considered "good" for most programs? Not applying to any of the major leaguers this go around. v: 570, 158 (77%) q: 670, 152 (52%)
  4. I think you're going about it wrong. Firstly, I'd only contact the POI you're most hopeful about, and if you get a dismal response from them, try another in the department. I also wouldn't bother reading much beyond the abstract of a paper, if that. Their bio on the faculty pages should provide you with enough insight about who they are, and if you want to know more, you can ask. A recital of their previous work doesn't really show what you are capable of, how you fit with them, or why they should respond to you. I would probably only bring up a specific paper if it's 100% aligned with your focus.
  5. Kind of an old thread, but I thought I'd jump in because I have one of these today! I don't think it's an interview persay-- I emailed him just generally inquiring about research and advising and he asked to set up a meeting to skype and talk. I haven't even submitted my application yet. And I have no idea how formal this will be. I'm probably going to look nice, but definitely not wear a suit, and hope for the best. I'm pretty nervous. At least he is calling me so I don't have to make the decision about whether we use the video option.
