  1. Has anyone received a financial aid award before their admission decision? A few days ago my online account posted my financial aid award of a grant and a loan. However, when I emailed the SW department asking if this was related to their admission decision they said they would contact me soon.

Last year I received my financial aid award from SFSU a few weeks before I got my official rejection.  Sometimes, the FA dept. runs faster.

  2. Congrats, A_SouthWest! I applied as well and still waiting for a response. Would you mind if I ask your stats? GPA, work experience, etc?

    Sure!

I had a 3.8 GPA with around 3 years of experience in crisis intervention, no research experience.

I was rejected last year, and attended their re-applicant info session this summer; I was told i had 3 strong LOR's which I reused this year, and hopefully wrote a much stronger statement this time around, but they said my biggest weakness was my experience.

If I remember last year correctly.  We were told the decision was delayed at the end of Feb and given a specific week to expect the decision; just like this year.  But I'm pretty sure we all heard, good and bad, within a few hours of each other, on the very last day of that week. I was surprised to find out today instead of Friday!

Good luck!   If you don't get in and plan on trying again I cannot tell you how helpful the re-applicant sessions were for me.

  3. Thanks! I was very close to applying to UW because of their dual MSU/MPH program (and I've always wanted to live in Seattle) but decided against paying out of state tuition.

Yea, that's probably a smart choice.  I'm actually thankful I didn't get in last year, we moved up here this past September anyway and now by the time I start in the fall I'll qualify for in state tuition!

  4. Congrats! UW has an awesome program!

Thank you!  I'm so excited, I was rejected last year so it's awesome that after a year of hard work I turned things around!

Congrats on UofM!  I'm from Michigan and have always heard amazing things about their program too!

  5. Thanks for taking the time to write that. I'll admit that I feel pretty discouraged, especially since I only applied to two schools, but I guess I'll just keep hoping that I make the final list. Good luck to you! If you heard any other gems at those sessions, please share away. I'll have to find more things to obsess on now that this painful wait and see period has been further extended...

Yep this happened last year too, I actually got the exact same email last year verbatim. They explained that all it really meant was that you were now put into the general applicant pool. Looks like I'm back in the same place this year too....:/

  6. I am hoping some of you will help me calm my nerves about this process. I am only able to apply to UW because I am not mobile. I have two kiddos and am applying to their part-time program. My undergrad is in Psychology. I intend to focus on mental health. My GPA is 3.65 and I have a smattering of random volunteer experience and currently work full time for a fortune 500 company. I will reduce my hours or quit if I am accepted. I think my references are strong, but I just don't know anyone else who is doing this so I'd appreciate anyone willing to share their experience with me. What do you think my odds are? With only one school available to me geographically and financially, it's so scary!

Hi! I applied to UW last year and was rejected (giving it another go this time around). This past summer the director of admissions met with reapplicants to go over where some of their weaknesses in the application may have been. I applied for the full time day program so I'm not sure if they look at different criteria for part time but my biggest blight was my experience. The 2012 cohort had an average of I think 3.5 years of experience. It seems like they really put an emphasize on that, whether it be research, direct care, or community work. They really want you to 100% know what social work is all about.

You're GPA is around or a little above average for the cohort.

    Good luck!

  7. I just finished my application for University of Washington today! I'll also be applying to Portland State University because it is instate and funding is a big issue for me. My other choice was Berkeley, but mostly because I just want to get back to the Bay Area...I decided to let that go since it doesn't seem like the best way to pick a school (especially one with that price tag).

I'm hoping to do a MSW/MPH with a global focus, concentrating on health outcomes for migrant women and children. The focus that UW has is PERFECT for me, but it comes with the possibility of a lot of debt since I'll be out of state. As a single mama, it may come down to finances for me. I'm hoping to magically get a large enough aid package to make UW a reality.

Did anyone else get their application into UW for early consideration? Any idea when we could expect to hear back?

Last year was UW's first year doing early admissions and it was a bit of a mess, hopefully this year they'll be better prepared.

We were told we'd hear decisions in February, and most of us didn't hear anything until literally 11:30pm on February 28th.  Some people were accepted and it seemed like even more were rolled over into the general admission decision which came around the end of March.

I didn't make it in last year but hoping with another year of experience I'll fare better this year.

    Good luck!

  8. So, I was declined from my first choice school Univ. of Washington for 13-14, but they admissions department had reapplicant meetings where they provided you with notes on your application (awesome)

My biggest weakness in my application turned out to be my relevant experience, volunteer + paid. I had about a 1.3 years when I applied and now have over 2 years of part time volunteer/internships at a crisis center. The 2012 admissions profile says the average experience was 2.65.

So, I need to find experience but am in a predicament.

My boyfriend and I are in the process of trying to move to Seattle, hopefully in the next few weeks (pending the sale of his house).  once in Seattle I will be pursuing a job in the field as well as research/volunteer positions to try to bulk up my experience as much as possible before applications open.

However, in the mean time I am very limited, most of the "social services" volunteer positions require training and commitments which I cannot make since I will be leaving soon.

Any ideas of what I could quickly get while still in Texas or any help with ideas once we land in Seattle?

  9. I did, I applied to PSU advanced standing and didn't get in, but it was the only other school I applied to. UW is my dream school, and I feel that if I don't get in now, I'll try again next year. I was accepted in the City Year program in Seattle. So either way I'll be heading up to Washington. I'm from Texas, and I've been dying to get up there for so long! Oh! You went to undergrad at UW? What did you study?

I'm in Texas too and anxiously waiting to hear from them tonight but heading up to Seattle either way.

  10. So is anyone else kind of upset that we applied early action to UW and then got pushed into the regular action notification time?  I purposefully applied for EA deadline because I needed to know earlier rather than later... on top of it I couldn't include MANY things in my app because I found out a week after the EA deadline, but before the regular deadline.  If I would have known the waiting game was going to continue, I would have just applied to the regular deadline.. anyone else feel it's a little unfair? Congrats to all those who did get in though!  I think I'm just a little discouraged.

I'm frustrated as well, I applied EA for a reason, but at the same time I'd rather be given a shot with general decision applicants that just declined outright with EA, if that were the case.

  11. I also received that email! At first I thought that they might have sent it to everyone, but now that I see that some people have been accepted, I'm assuming it must be some sort of wait list notification. Anyone else have any other ideas/information? Also, does anyone know if UW has sent out any rejections?

I just spoke with UW, Not sure about if they sent out any rejections but they said  basically that letter meant we have been moved into the regular action decision pool instead of early action.  :(

  12. I had a great reference lined up but unfortunately I cannot get in touch with her despite numerous emails, phone calls, linked in messages etc and my deadline is in 3 days. She agreed to do it and I have sent all the information twice but never received any confirmation that she received it.

So, now I'm faced with having 2 days to secure another letter my options arent great.

I'm applying to MSW programs and I could either get my supervisor from a volunteer position I held at a crisis hotline. She has since left the company (therefore no official title) but has known me over a year.

Or my current boss, after volunteering at the hotline I was offered an admin position but it's only administrative work and my boss has only worked with me for 4 months, but she is an Executive Director of the whole non-profit.

Which sounds like they would be the stronger letter? I'm confident both would say very positive things about me.
