  1. Do you think a student applying for a Ph.D (in my case BME) with an M.S. from an average graduate school (ranked somewhere in the top 50) with average M.S. grades (GPA: 3.5) to a top tier program (for example Columbia ranked #20) with research experience and publications would be competitive? Also do you think an average MS student applying to a Ph.D program would be competitive versus a student applying with B.S. with higher grades but less research experience?
  2. hi all, I currently began my M.S. studies (in BME) at an average graduate program (ranked somewhere in the top 50 I think). My question is, do you think that applying to a Ph.D program with an M.S. degree, research experience and some publications will help me to overcome an average undergraduate GPA (3.33) if I also have average M.S. grades (3.5)? I wrote some stats in paranethisis because I think this general question could help anyone from any major (i.e. anyone who responds doesn't have to focus on BME, could be any type of engineering in general) . Thanks all for the replies in advance!
  3. Thanks so much for the reply. Yes I've been looking on web sites, but since I'm aiming a little lower, somewhere around the #48 ranked schools and down, they only seem to have minimum requirements listed as opposed to having incoming averages. I didn't know if calling the admissions offices was appropriate for this, but it couldn't hurt to try, so I'll definitely give it a shot tomorrow.
  4. Hi all, I just finished taking my GRE today and don't have much money to spend on college grad. applications, so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with BME M.S. applications, and could let me know what schools, preferably in NY state, I would be competitive for/ should apply to? I would do the research myself but I can't afford to buy the U.S. News Engineering Compass so I have no idea what the average GRE scores for any schools are, and regular web searches only show minimum requirements but I really want to see averages. My GPA: 3.085 (rounds to a 3.1?) GRE Verbal - 154 (510-520 old scale) GRE Quant. - 157 (730 old scale) As you can see all of my grades/scores are very mediocre, so I have no idea where I should apply, again preferably in NY, but any advice on any school anywhere would be great, if I get an offer from an out of state school I wouldn't mind going. I'm going to be graduating from UB (SUNY Buffalo) with B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. Thanks for the help in advance!

  6. I'm assuming you're not a math/engineering major? If you are it's ok too, the range of questions that could pop up on the GRE is pretty wide. Depending on when you plan to take the GRE, you should just do as many practice problems as possible, and if you have time, before you even begin to practice, purchase a study guide for something around $25-$40 and go through their quantitative review. The Kaplan GRE prep book does a pretty good job. I never ran into a situation where I had to use the quadratic formula and I did over 300 practice quantitative problems from the Kaplan book in one week, as well as the 80 extra I took on the powerprep tests. Then again if I did run into a situation where I had to use the quadratic I probably would have recognized it, if you're not an engineering or math type of major then it's understandable, it's a pretty simple formula to memorize, whether you have to memorize it or not I'm not sure, sorry that I couldn't be of more help. One thing I can say is make sure you know all of the equations for area for basic shapes, such as circles which pop up a lot, and obviously your squares, rectangles and triangles.
