  1. Hi all,

i'm applying for PhD this fall and the problem is I won't be able to get my master's at my current school.

PhD programs I'm applying to don't require a master's degree at all, but the problem is the fact that I wasn't able to finish the thesis. (This is why I dropped out)

I'm not sure how I should explain this situation in my applications. Just be honest that I wasn't in a situation where I could conduct a full research?

I have some contacts with POIs in some of the schools I'm applying to. I met them and left a good impression with my writing samples and prospective research ideas. Maybe I should tell them what happened?

I know I will have to be honest with everything that has happened, but I guess I'm just afraid.

I'd appreciate any comments or advice.

  2. Hope the theorists here all had a good time at SMT this last weekend awkwardly following around prospective faculty members, I know I did. Also hope your application processes are going well -- got a lot of work left to do, but I just cut Indiana from my list, so hey, no more December 1 deadlines! Voila, two more weeks to finish papers.

Don't you just hate it when out of several schools you are applying, only one school has Dec. 1 deadline... and all the other schools have their deadlines in late Dec-January?

... I do. :( But i figured I'd apply to one more Dec. 1 deadline school now that i already decided to apply to one anyway.

  3. I heard some schools allow you to include a note for each composition when you submit your portfolio. That might be a better place to explain your work in-depth maybe?? (rather than in your SOP)

Or if it has something to do with the school fit, that may be more significant. But I don't think you want to make a paragraph in your SOP sound like an analysis.

But I'm not a composition student, so that's just my opinion...! :)

  4. You know life is so funny!  I have been praying for an acceptance.  Even dreaming of an acceptance and a scholarship or fellowship offer.  I just felt like a call was coming or something was coming in the mail.  I was so sure!  I'm not usually wrong about those things.  Today, when we arrived home from my son's surgery, there was an acceptance letter in the mail......for him!  And an offer of a scholarship!  He is so excited.  He said, "Wow!  I'm going to college!"  It's one of several acceptances we hope he will get.  I can't explain the joy I felt.  He was laying there in his cast, just smiling, asking me to go to the website and check out programs.  I did of course, and excitedly we talked about the different possibilities of what he could study.  We called and found out his financial package is on the way.  Unbelievable!  The things I felt, that I knew so keenly in my spirit were not for me at all, but for my son.  It's amazing how things work sometimes.  I thought I would be so upset going into the weekend.  And I am so incredibly happy!  God is good people....so good!  :P  :D   :)

Talk about mom's intuition! Congrats on your son's acceptance!

  5. my screen says your're the 101th poster :P

OH NO!!! Well, It's the 100th not counting the very first post of the thread.  :)

Anyway, Princeton will make decisions sometime next week... I know that a lot of people here applied, so good luck to us all!

  6. Just wanted to share some of the interview questions I was asked today. I have to admit that some of them threw me a bit, since I had been advised to prepare for questions about day-to-day life as a grad student, research expectations and methodology, coursework, etc., and this seemed a bit more abstract than that. Still, I think (hope) it went well. Best of luck to everyone and congrats to those who were accepted at Chicago!  :D

Is there a person and/or article that got you interested in musicology?

What journals do you read regularly? Describe an article or essay you've read recently that provoked an emotional response from you.

You are a recently hired musicology professor, and must teach three courses. What courses would you want to teach and why?

In my opinion, those questions are pretty specific! Well, at least compared to what I got. How long was the interview?

edit: I'm the 100th poster in this thread  B)

  7. "...and Chris is going back to work. He has a degree in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan, so naturally he's a receptionist at a Dentist's office."

Oh... lol of course. But that could have been true for any other humanities/arts degrees, right?

I thought it would be more music-specific.  :(

  8. OK. Just had an interview (musicology). It was about 20 minutes, which was a little shorter than I expected. Pretty generic questions in a rather informal setting... (Why PhD, this program, my interests, strength/weakness and so on.) I think that is mostly the case for Phone/Skype interviews or single-session interview. May be different for 2- or 3-day interview weekend. Decision will be made a little later... Good luck to me!

  9. Did anyone already do an interview(s) for this season yet? What was it like? I think it'll be nice if we share some interview experiences from this season. I know I will when I'm done with one soon.

  10. It depends on schools/programs, but an interview invitation generally isn't a definite "in!"

I also have an interview in a few days and that's why I'm so nervous since I'm treating it as a Round 2, only with a slightly better chance than the Round 1.

You shouldn't be worrying too much though, that's what my profs said, but I'm just saying... Good Luck!

  11. It is kinda discussed above... but are you guys worried if anyone from the schools you applied would find out if you posted with too much information? Not just the results, but regular threads also. Especially posts in the discipline forums under "The Menu."

Because I know that some people directly quote parts of the emails they got from professors, or even the whole email itself.

Also, it will be very easy to tell who's who in the result section if your discipline usually has a small department.

    I am concerned.

  12. From what I understand, Princeton only does regional interviews and only if there is an alumni in the area willing to conduct them. If you don't get an interview it does not count against you (per website). Karajan- about what time last year did you hear from Columbia and Penn for interviews?

Maybe that's for undergraduate admissions? Because they are doing Skype interviews this year.

  13. Make sure you can intelligently discuss the desired course of your research and how University X would be a good fit. You should also familiarize yourself with recent scholarship of the faculty. I have a Northwestern interview and I am familiar with the writings of one faculty member in particular, so I will make sure to bone up on the work of the other faculty before I visit. I'll be at Northwestern from Feb. 14-16, and I'm not quite sure what to expect from a 3 day "interview". I imagine it will be a mixture of interviews, meetings with faculty and current students, sitting in on classes, and perhaps a social event or two. It's an extended visit and they are paying for everything, including my flight. Surely that's a good sign, right? Does anyone have a sense of how competitive it remains at this stage? I would welcome any general interview advice from those who have gone through this already. Should I expect any diagnostic exams during this visit? Do I need to dust off my solfege?

hiroshiman, there are numerous threads and posts about interview weekends, so you will benefit from those if you haven't looked at it yet. (I guess you did already?) Mine is just a skype interview. I wish I were invited to an all-paid visit! Enjoy your visit at Northwestern... and good luck!

I'm just an applicant so I don't know about competition rates at this stage, but it could be anything from what I hear. AdComms might just want to check you in person and get to know you better beyond the papers, or there might be 2:1~4:1 chance of getting in. Of course I'm hoping for the former but who knows... Anyway it will be easier if you know who your interviewer(s) is/are going to be. I don't know who will interview me yet

  14. My PhD Musicology applications were submitted as complete (GRE scores, recommendation letters, writing samples, etc.) as of an hour ago. Now comes the hard part: waiting.

Wow, that was fast! when's the earliest deadline for you? For me it ranges from Dec.1 to Feb.1 so I have about a month still.

  15. It is very important to apply to schools that are good fits for you. In my view, it does not necessarily matter of there are faculty members at the schools you apply to who study exactly what you study -- i.e. video game music -- but it is important that there are people there who could, nonetheless, advise you. For instance, taking an example closer to what I work on, say you were interested in working on Shostakovich's instrumental music, you could still work with any Russian music specialist, most likely; you wouldn't need to apply only to places where there are Shostakovich specialists. Does that make sense?

Yeah ... that's exactly what I did. Otherwise I would have been unable to come up with 5 schools lol (Unless I want to go into ethnomusicology, which is quite a different matter...) I hope 5 is enough! Hopefully...

Also ... did you usually contact POIs before applying?

  16. Good luck, guys! I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have!

    Hi Karajan,

I see from your signature you applied to lots of schools ... I just made a list of schools and I have 5.

and 2-3 of them are some of those big names ... and trust me I didn't chose those only based on their names!! :)

Anyway I'm beginning to worry. Should I not worry too much if they are good fits?

(FYI my primary interest is video game music)
