  1. Hi all, i'm applying for PhD this fall and the problem is I won't be able to get my master's at my current school. PhD programs I'm applying to don't require a master's degree at all, but the problem is the fact that I wasn't able to finish the thesis. (This is why I dropped out) I'm not sure how I should explain this situation in my applications. Just be honest that I wasn't in a situation where I could conduct a full research? I have some contacts with POIs in some of the schools I'm applying to. I met them and left a good impression with my writing samples and prospective research ideas. Maybe I should tell them what happened? I know I will have to be honest with everything that has happened, but I guess I'm just afraid. I'd appreciate any comments or advice.
  2. ^ I'd just submit. It would just calm me down.
  3. Don't you just hate it when out of several schools you are applying, only one school has Dec. 1 deadline... and all the other schools have their deadlines in late Dec-January? ... I do. But i figured I'd apply to one more Dec. 1 deadline school now that i already decided to apply to one anyway.
  4. it's so quiet in here o_o I'm also re-applying. Good luck to everyone!
  5. I heard some schools allow you to include a note for each composition when you submit your portfolio. That might be a better place to explain your work in-depth maybe?? (rather than in your SOP) Or if it has something to do with the school fit, that may be more significant. But I don't think you want to make a paragraph in your SOP sound like an analysis. But I'm not a composition student, so that's just my opinion...!
  6. Talk about mom's intuition! Congrats on your son's acceptance!
  7. ouch indeed!! Now I'll probably have to wait at least until the end of this month to hear from other schools... ahhh
  8. OH NO!!! Well, It's the 100th not counting the very first post of the thread. Anyway, Princeton will make decisions sometime next week... I know that a lot of people here applied, so good luck to us all!
  9. In my opinion, those questions are pretty specific! Well, at least compared to what I got. How long was the interview? edit: I'm the 100th poster in this thread
  10. Oh... lol of course. But that could have been true for any other humanities/arts degrees, right? I thought it would be more music-specific.
  11. Thanks! Good luck to you too!
  12. OK. Just had an interview (musicology). It was about 20 minutes, which was a little shorter than I expected. Pretty generic questions in a rather informal setting... (Why PhD, this program, my interests, strength/weakness and so on.) I think that is mostly the case for Phone/Skype interviews or single-session interview. May be different for 2- or 3-day interview weekend. Decision will be made a little later... Good luck to me!
  13. OMG. Me too... I couldn't believe that one school wants to interview me and I doubted it more times than I can remember, but again... they did invite me. I like your Eeyore metaphor. lol
  14. I have an interview tomorrow, and last night in my dream, a professor from that school paid a visit to my apartment to help me prepare for the interview. LOL Good luck to those who have interview(s)!
  15. Did anyone already do an interview(s) for this season yet? What was it like? I think it'll be nice if we share some interview experiences from this season. I know I will when I'm done with one soon.
  16. It depends on schools/programs, but an interview invitation generally isn't a definite "in!" I also have an interview in a few days and that's why I'm so nervous since I'm treating it as a Round 2, only with a slightly better chance than the Round 1. You shouldn't be worrying too much though, that's what my profs said, but I'm just saying... Good Luck!
  17. It is kinda discussed above... but are you guys worried if anyone from the schools you applied would find out if you posted with too much information? Not just the results, but regular threads also. Especially posts in the discipline forums under "The Menu." Because I know that some people directly quote parts of the emails they got from professors, or even the whole email itself. Also, it will be very easy to tell who's who in the result section if your discipline usually has a small department. I am concerned.
  18. Maybe that's for undergraduate admissions? Because they are doing Skype interviews this year.
  19. hiroshiman, there are numerous threads and posts about interview weekends, so you will benefit from those if you haven't looked at it yet. (I guess you did already?) Mine is just a skype interview. I wish I were invited to an all-paid visit! Enjoy your visit at Northwestern... and good luck! I'm just an applicant so I don't know about competition rates at this stage, but it could be anything from what I hear. AdComms might just want to check you in person and get to know you better beyond the papers, or there might be 2:1~4:1 chance of getting in. Of course I'm hoping for the former but who knows... Anyway it will be easier if you know who your interviewer(s) is/are going to be. I don't know who will interview me yet
  20. For those who have a Ph.D interview(s) ahead (or who had interviews in previous seasons), what are you doing to prepare for that? Especially if it's not a long one. (within 30 minutes)
  21. Is anyone going there next week?
  22. Wow, that was fast! when's the earliest deadline for you? For me it ranges from Dec.1 to Feb.1 so I have about a month still.
  23. Yeah ... that's exactly what I did. Otherwise I would have been unable to come up with 5 schools lol (Unless I want to go into ethnomusicology, which is quite a different matter...) I hope 5 is enough! Hopefully... Also ... did you usually contact POIs before applying?
  24. Hi Karajan, I see from your signature you applied to lots of schools ... I just made a list of schools and I have 5. and 2-3 of them are some of those big names ... and trust me I didn't chose those only based on their names!! Anyway I'm beginning to worry. Should I not worry too much if they are good fits? (FYI my primary interest is video game music)
