  1. ... a bit late coming in the thread (!), but some thoughts nonetheless, for others perhaps. I've just started work in industry with a cog psych PhD, for various reasons which aren't germane to the discussion. I preferred an academic career from the outset. I definitely do not need a PhD to do what I'm doing, and I expect it is much the same for most industry positions. 4+ years experience in this industry (the time I spent doing a PhD) probably would have been better. A PhD is for doing research. Academic research. Period. One can make use of a PhD for other purposes, in much the same way that one can use the heel of a shoe to hammer a nail. It works, but it isn't the best use of it, and a better tool exists. Think very hard about doing a PhD, if you already know you're not interested in the academy.
