Ugh, I almost hope that I won't get an interview by phone, because first my phone sucks and I can barely hear what people say (don't have enough money to buy a new one right now), and also my accent is harder to understand... oh well...

GRE Scores for Art History Graduate Programs
juliette22 replied to manetdejeuner's topic in Art History
That is what I would assume too. My GRE scores are generally pretty low with a AW of 3.5 and 4. But while visiting schools they told me that they look at it as "a foreigners' score", so they don't expect a 6. But anyway don't stress out too much about it, it is not at all the most important criteria in admission. -
Might be stupid, but I have a question: how many programs are they? I don't think they are many more than 50 but I might be wrong. (in the US only of course)

make it 7. trying to not eat my nails... best solution: being busy! working, yoga etc, anything is good to keep my mind out of it! Good luck to you all!

Thanks guys! I did look up last years' results. So I guess anywhere between February and April, well that's going to to be a long wait!

Hey everybody! I hope you are all enjoying the Holidays free of applications! I applied to Modern/contemporary American Art History PhD programs and it was... intense! I only have one question for you, if anybody has an idea: when to expect a decision from those schools? Columbia said not before the end of March! Is that real? it sounds so far away! Also I know that might delay my application but one of my professor is being super slow at sending out my recommendation letter. So if you have any advice on how to make him do it a little faster that would be awesome! He is great and I definitely don't want to be rude, he is just super busy, but I hope it is not going to do any harm to my application. Good luck to you all!

GRE Scores for Art History Graduate Programs
juliette22 replied to manetdejeuner's topic in Art History
I am probably the unluckiest person when it comes to standardized tests, something always happens, (two toefl two crazy experiences, like I took the first one with the flue), so this new GRE, I forgot my passeport and got in 5min lates, spend the 30minutes before crying because they told me if my bf did not make it on time I would not take it that day (meaning not ever considering the deadlines). Anyway, improved my verbal to 154, and I talked to teachers it is apparently acceptable because I am french so that's cool -
Well they have three galleries and students have the possibilty of getting involved in the curating of exhibitions. Teachers will also help you a lot, I got an internship through one of mine. Most proffessors have relations and are glad to help you when they can. I don't know if there is anything official about it though, but I would not be surprised if they have official partnerships.

GRE Scores for Art History Graduate Programs
juliette22 replied to manetdejeuner's topic in Art History
Hey. I just took the GRE and read all your comments. I think my case is pretty bad... I got 148 on both verbal and quantitative. I know this is very low but some of my deadlines are 1st of December so too late to retake it. Some are 1st January so still ok. But I really don't have time to study intensely in the next month, or if I do it will postpone the researches for my master's thesis... I am applying for phd programs in contemporary art history. mostly in big school (which I think now was a bad idea). My gpa is strong: 3.8, I have good letters and all the rest is good too I think. my toefl is 108, which is good but not incredible. Also, I am french so it explains my score partly. oh yeah and I had to take that test while we still don't have any power (I live in New York). I guess my question is: should I retake it? I am not even sure that I can improve my score that much, I am just very bad with standardized test. -
Hi! I did my first year of masters in art history at Hunter (I was in an exchange program from France). I only took classes in modern/contemporary but I have met some professor in Renaissance/Baroque and only heard good things about them, and any teacher at Hunter actually. The program is very rich and offers a lot of possibilities. The fact that a lot of classes are mixed MA/MFAs is also very nice and leads to very interesting classes. The location is obviously great, the building is fine and they were still working on renewing the library this summer. If you have specific questions, I'll be glad to answer

That sounds great, I am putting a list together for my recommenders and will start contacting some universities then. I do not know anybody at the French Department at Hunter and I know from experience that the international office is not very useful for detailed questions like that, but I will give it a try! Thank you!

I did started the application too, it worked fine..

Thank you so much for your answers! I will get my MA from the Sorbonne and yes I am applying to USA doctorate programs. I am meeting the minimums for the TOEFL (they usually are between 95-100 from what I have seen) but I am super stressed out about the GRE. I feel kind of weird contacting teachers too, I can see how busy they are at Hunter or the Sorbonne and I don't think they would like it if every applicants contacts them. I will see for each school individually I guess. (I remember reading on some universities website that you have to contact a professor). I guess I am going to just send the letters of recommendation by mail. (like I would prepare the envelopes and all and they just have to sign it or something). Also, does anybody knows which service I should use to translate my transcripts? I was going for WES but it looks like they are only doing an evaluation of your grades and that you need to send them a translated copy. Those things are so expensive, and complicated looking so I am a little lost. Thanks again Losemygrip!

Hi everybody, I am applying for a PHD in art History and as a lot of students I am very stressed out. Here is my story, I am french and came to the US last year for an exchange program at Hunter College for my 1st year of masters in art history. I have a gpa of 3.78 but my undergrad is more around 3.5. I am currently in the US, working for a photographer and doing research, as well as finishing my second year of master offsite for my french university, Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne. So I have one thesis written and translated in english (re-read by an english major) (in France we are writting one thesis per year of masters so two in the end), experience in research and quite a lot of internships in museums and galleries. I have one of my professors from Hunter, my research (internship) director and my boss (photographer) writing me a letter. So I guess my first question is: am I really competitive? My toefl is 105 and I am taking the gre in 2 weeks but I do not hope for an amazing score because as you can probably tell my english is not perfect. Also, is there a way to make the recommendation letter process easy for the writers? I plan on applying to more than 10 schools and they are all very busy and I am not sure they would actually take the time to send the letters to each schools. And last but not least: Should I contact and/or go visit schools? I am in New York so I can easily go see schools on the east coast. I had different answers about wether or not I should contact professors I am interested in working with. (I am writing both of my thesis on Jasper Johns so I hope to specialize in the 20th century but I am not close-minded about it). Thank you for reading me and I hope somebody has a couple of answers for me Good luck for your applications!
