  1. Hi - congrats on your acceptances! I graduated from UNC May 2015, and there is plenty of focus on adult neuro. Katrina Haley & Adam Jacks do a lot of research on aphasia - Dr Haley teaches an entire course on aphasia and everyone is required to take adult neurogenic disorders with her. Dr. Jacks teaches motor speech disorders, which is also required. I work in an elementary school now and I felt like I was in the minority being ped focused. Let me know if you have any other questions!
  2. Hi everyone! I am finishing up my CFY in North Carolina and am considering moving to Chicago. I want to work in public schools - looking at the licensure information it seems like I need to take additional coursework in teaching and literacy?? Has anyone from out of state gone through the licensure process? I am also interested in the hiring process for CPS.... thanks so much for any info!!
  3. Hi - I worked full time when I was doing my observation hours, and I ended up just taking a few days off to do them b/c I couldn't find any night or weekend options. I went to Helen Hayes Hospital and did a full day there (I think I rented a car but it might be accessible by metronorth) and found a private practice that let me go for a full day. You might be able to find a private practice that has night or weekend hours - will definitely require some legwork & phone calls - I had a hard time finding places for during the day! Good luck!
  4. I kept mine and I am happy I did - they were a useful reference for a lot of classes - especially anatomy and child lang development books. I also used them when studying for the praxis.
  5. I am out of state right now (UNC Chapel Hill) and I will probably do my CFY in NC and then go back to NYC. If you want to do CFY year in NY, you just can't work in a school/educational setting, but you could do early intervention or a hospital placement. The NY state education dept website has info on certification - I can't seem to copy & paste the link but if you google "NYSED tssld pathway" you should be able to find it.
  6. SUNY Purchase has an online statistics course for the behavioral sciences. It's 3 weeks long, I think. It was maybe $750 for in state, more for out of state.
  7. Hi all - I just did a whirlwind tour of about 10 apt complexes in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. Feel free to message me with any questions -
  8. I was thinking of giving a donation to the dean's fund for one of my recommenders (who is the dean) and giving a gift card to donorschoose.org to the others. I thought about a mug from where I will be attending, but then I thought it might be wierd to give a mug to the recommenders at the school where I declined admission. Plus thank you note. Only problem is I can't decide on $ amount...
  9. I took 2 pre-reqs per semester (including summer) - one semester both classes were seated and the rest were online. I work full time and was able to do it. It's hard, but worth it I think. I like seated classes better, but I was always stressed that I would have to work late and would miss class or a final exam (I ended up taking vacation days for exams just to make sure I wouldn't get stuck at work). Online was much better in terms of scheduling. One of my classes was observations, and we did the 25 hrs of observation through that. Had to do a write-up of each obervation and include the standard info - date, signature of supervisor, etc.
  10. And don't forget the fees for ordering transcripts. They lost one of mine so I had to re-order, and my application was marked incomplete because they needed TOEFL scores, even though I am a US citizen and went to school in the US..... I applied right at the deadline and was not very good at checking the status of my app online, which did not help at all. Oh well.
  11. For anyone who wants to work in New York but isn't going to school there (I feel like there was a thread about this but I can't remember where) i got an email from State Ed saying that once you have your NY state license as a speech pathologist you can get the necessary teaching certification (TSSLD) after a few seminar type things. No extra pedagogical courses or anything. I also emailed the UFT certification and licensing advisor, and he said that the state is changing ALL the certification requirements in May 2014 and they don't know what will happen after that.
  12. UNC has a recording of the admitted students info session - ask Ina for it if she didn't already give it to you. It was really helpful to watch it.
  13. I accepted at UNC Chapel Hill and declined SUNY New Paltz. It was a hard decision! Hopefully will help someone out on the waitlist.
