Mixing sociology with photography on the side?
OrangeSoc replied to herbertmarcuse's topic in Sociology Forum
I think photography can be a powerful addition to sociology. Are you familiar with the subfield of visual sociology? You might want to check out the website for the International Visual Sociology Association (http://visualsociology.org/) or just google "visual sociology" for more resources. -
YES! I just saw it! IT'S HAPPENING!!!
-
On last year's thread, someone posted at 9:09am that they saw the "maintenance" notice. (It was the day before the results were released.)
-
So, does this mean that I could wake up at 5am the day after the maintenance message appears and see my status? Of course, it's not like I'm so eager to know that I would do something crazy like that... I'm just curious...

FertMigMort - thanks so much for generously answering our questions! I have a couple to add: 1. How much does the prestige, ranking, or basic name recognition of the undergraduate institution come in to play? Specifically, are students who graduate from mostly unknown state schools at a disadvantage compared to those graduating from a well-know school/program? 2. Did you encounter transcripts for students who had completed their undergrad on a part-time basis? If so, how was that perceived?

Thanks, socgrad2013! I'm glad to hear that the visit is a few weeks away. I'd love to be invited to it.
-
Hey, folks. Is NU having a visit day for admitted students? (I'm on the waitlist.)
-
I emailed them to inquire about my application -- rejected
-
I received an official notice of my rejection, but it was only after I emailed to inquire.
-
I'm still waiting. And still hoping for a second wave!

Tennessee's application deadline was Feb 1, and their visit is Feb 14-15! That's definitely not typical -- 4 weeks seems to be the average -- but it's not unheard of to give two (or less!) week's notice.

Folks who applied to Brown or Michigan State - Are we able to check the status of our application online? I have one link for Brown (http://www.applyweb.com/cgi-bin/ustat), but when I log in, it simply confirms that all of pieces of my application were submitted. I don't see anywhere noting my application status... Thanks!

What??? I just started accepting the fact that I was going to be rejected. Let the roller coaster begin again!
-
And right after I posted that another Berkeley acceptance appeared in the results...
-
And did anyone claim the Berkeley acceptance posted yesterday? Seems pretty strange that only one person posted...
-
Jacib - you've got to be one of the coolest people in the world. I absolutely love your generous spirit. That's all.

I'm at home with the flu (ugh!) and have nothing better to do, so I went through the anonymous results for sociology from last year. People posted that they had been invited for interviews at the following schools. Baylor (during visit weekend) California - San Francisco (at least some were via phone) Colorado - Boulder (informal, part of open house) Columbia Cornell Emory (during visit weekend) Georgia - Athens Indiana (via phone) Nebraska - Lincoln Notre Dame (? applicant seemed unsure; if true, it occurred during visit weekend) Pennsylvania Penn State Rice Rutgers This list is likely not comprehensive, so feel free to add to it (for example, jacib mentioned Vanderbilt).

At the risk of appearing completely ignorant, I'll take AaronM's question a bit further. If some of the schools do call us, what in the world should we say? Obviously we are not going to immediately accept the offer because we'll want to compare offers. I know I should demonstrate enthusiasm and interest, but does anyone have any other suggestions? Thinking "on the spot" is not one of my strengths, so I'd like to have a loose plan prepared in advance to avoid embarrassing myself!

Exactly! I'm a first-gen college student, so my family doesn't understand at all. They keep saying, "You're still not done with those applications?" My favorite comment so far came from my mom when I told her that I was applying to Berkeley and Wisconsin-Madison. She said, "That's nice, dear." I smiled and did my best to explain to her that it's sort of a really big deal.
-
Hey, everyone! I'm applying to Berkeley, Wisconsin-Madison, Northwestern, UT-Austin, Minnesota, Brown, Michigan State, Oregon, Tennessee-Knoxville, and Florida International. 3 down so far, 7 more to go!

You might want to take a quick look at each department's web site before emailing the grad secretaries. I know, for example, that Berkeley's site says they will accept GRE scores that are a few weeks late as long as the rest of the application is complete by the Dec. 10 deadline. http://sociology.berkeley.edu/faq-admissions
