I found out yesterday that I am on an unofficial wait-list as well but that my likelihood of getting an offer is slim to none, either because a number of people have accepted their offers or because I am that far down the wait-list.

I found out this morning that I am wait-listed for funding at the University of Pittsburgh. The graduate studies secretary informed me that not all offers of admission had been accepted and that the department might gain more assistantships as well. Anyone earn an offer here they are likely to decline? I am not trying to hasten or persuade anyone's decision-making process. I am just trying to figure out whether or not I should consider Pittsburgh as any kind of realistic option, as I find the program very appealing. Luckily, I have offers elsewhere.

Accepted into South Florida's master's program with full funding!......and they have a doctoral program to stay around for too.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "there are several Ph.D. programs that do allow you to fast-track your program if you have an M.A."? Do you mean that some Ph.D. programs are open to accepting transfer credits so students entering with an M.A. do not need the same amount of time to finish as someone entering with just a B.A.? Some Ph.D. programs seem very open to accepting M.A. credits (or at least approach it on a case-by-case basis) while others make the student start from square one (which, I think, is not ideal, especially if one has to take multiple courses over again).

Do you think it's better to go to a terminal M.A. program rather than an M.A. program with a doctoral program requiring reapplication due to the possibility that faculty will not be receptive to writing letters of reference for a student they know who wishes to pursue doctoral study elsewhere? Students are forced to pursue doctoral study elsewhere at a terminal program and placement in elite doctoral programs makes the program look good. On the contrary, departments with separate M.A. and Ph.D. programs cannot stand to lose all its M.A. students to other Ph.D. programs.

I'm in the same boat with a few schools right now. Decisions, decisions...

Has anyone been officially rejected from Minnesota or contacted the department to see if they have been wait-listed? I'm in a similar situation.

Can you explain the difference between the "research master option" and the "masters with thesis but mainly coursework"? As I understand it, at least as American universities go, the only difference between a thesis and a non-thesis master's is six credits - one less course the third and fourth semesters for thesis work.

Did you apply without a master's and just with a B.A.? Or did you earn a non-thesis master's?

Can anyone comment on the history of/between American Studies, American Cultural Studies, and Cultural Studies? How would you describe the overlap and divergence between these fields? Furthermore, can anyone provide some seminal reading lists (texts, articles, etc.), especially for American Studies and Cultural Studies? I have a smattering of both in my literature M.A. but I'm trying to give myself a comprehensive overview and it's proving difficult.

Thanks for sharing. I eventually figured out how to navigate the results page. I've tried to avoid so I could keep my remaining shreds of sanity. It's impressive they were able to get accepted, although GREs and GPAs are not the only criteria used to determine applicants and different admissions committees rank them differently (as I'm sure you know). Hopefully this bodes well for our applications? (And I applied to Pittsburgh, so fingers crossed.......)

What were the stats for the two accepted at Pittsburgh?

How would writing a master's thesis in a terminal master's program fit into eventual doctoral applications? Do you think it's absolutely necessary? Or can an applicant still show ample research experience even if they pursue a non-thesis option? Sometimes I wonder if I'd benefit from more coursework.
