Hey Jazzy, Is that the same person who got into Duke, NYU, and UVA? If so, what is his/her specialty? It's funny, because if s/he is, let's say, a Victorianist, it's possible that none of these programs admitted any other Victorianists--or maybe just one other person each. That's why the waitlists might really turn out so well for so many people... (Not sure whether Princeton waitlists or not) Also, was the call from a POI at Princeton or from the DGS, etc, etc?

If you want meaningful CV padding, I think the absolute best thing you can do is learn another language, ideally a classical language or French or German. You will stand out brilliantly among all these monolinguals and it will greatly benefit your scholarship... Now I just have to take my own advice...

It seems to me what we're all trying to do is gage other people's chances (versus our own obviously). I too am very interested in doing this, but wouldn't the best way to do it be by reading people's statements / writing samples? I'd like to give the admissions committees slightly more credit... In most cases they are basing their decision primarily on the quality of the substantial amount of written work they have in front of them. If anybody wants to PM me their SOP I'd be very happy to read--and judge. Also, strange that we don't identify our interests and "period" more prominently. That's really who we are competing against, right? They have a certain amount of early modern or Romantic slots? (I am applying for early modern lit)
