  1. Hey Manierata, that's awesome. I'm heading to Hunter this fall and am waiting for my student account to be created so I can access my financial aid info...in the mean time I'm encouraged by your post. Just curious, were you in-state? I am a NYS resident so I'm hoping that bodes well for me, but I'm enrolling with or without any support, since the price, and the program, are amazing. I'm super glad to see you had such a great time at Hunter!
  2. Hi annabelle! I also think all the advice above is spot on, which is to say that the Hunter MA has the potential to afford you just as many (if not more) opportunities as the IFA MA. When I visited Hunter in December I spoke with several students who had been admitted to the IFA MA and to Columbia's MODA but had ultimately decided to attend Hunter; all had extremely positive things to say about their decision. I specifically asked them how people responded to Hunter being on their resumes (instead of IFA or MODA) as they moved about the art/internship world and they all said they had the sense that Hunter was extremely well respected - some even said better respected than these other programs. That said, it's definitely a personal choice. Have you had the opportunity to visit Hunter? I know you say you did your undergrad at NYU - have you been able to get a feeling of the IFA program's culture? At Hunter there are no PhDs to compete with, which in my opinion could be a huge plus. And for NYC study, you truly cannot beat the price of Hunter. But I'm biased, of course! I'll be attending Hunter in the fall and hope to see you there!
  3. Hey Mirop, thanks! I did figure this out eventually. I was concerned because I visited in December and met with the DGS, who told me it "used to be optional" but was no longer....which made me think it was now required. The department secretary cleared this up. Hopefully this thread helps someone else next year! Glad you like the program! It's actually my top choice so I'm excited to hear back!
  4. Ugh, that sucks! I totally understand your frustration; it sounds incredibly stressful and I feel really lucky that my application process went smoothly. Good luck, m-ttl! We are rooting for you!
  5. While we're on the topic of Rutgers, I just thought I'd point out that despite having received the acceptance email Monday, in the application portal my status is still showing "No Decision" as of today. So, if you haven't heard and your portal is showing no decision, it may not necessarily mean anything. Don't give up, Rutgers hopefuls! Wishing everyone the best!!
  6. Congrats, brazilianbuddy! Happy to report I got an acceptance for the MA at Rutgers yesterday. Really excited to have this program as an option!
  7. Hello all and hope the apps are treating you well! Has anyone applied to Hunter and been as confused as I am about the apparent lack of space in the application portal to upload a writing sample? There just doesn't seem to be a place for it. Upon visiting the department website I've just seen that a writing sample isn't listed as a required part of the application. Can that possibly be the case? I've checked the grad admissions FAQ as well to no avail. Anyone know anything about this? There are places for me to upload other documents, like a resume; I wonder if I should just sneak it in there?
  8. Thanks for the feedback, guys! Brazillian, I have been following your posts for a while because it seemed we were in similar situations! I've also received positive feedback from programs about my studio background, and I agree that people who bring backgrounds outside art history to the field certainly make interesting and valuable contributions. I think we'll be ok! Are you appling to MAs or PhDs, or both?
  9. Hello all! Long-time lurker finally emerging from the shadows. A massive, massive thanks to everyone who has contributed to the amazing resources in this little corner of the web! My BA is in studio art, and I'm making the stressful/exciting transition into art history MA programs that include criticism and theory. (I should add that I do have the required coursework in art history to apply, plus my background includes critical theory, literature, language, etc.) The departments I've been in touch with are very receptive to students with studio backgrounds. Yay! For my CV, I'm wondering if I should include my more studio-based stuff., ie awards/distinctions that were for my artwork (rather than research/writing), or my (short) exhibition activity. Of course I want my application as a whole to emphasize that I can make the transition-- I've tried to downplay the studio emphasis a bit by including a section for relevant coursework details. Does including this stuff show a complete picture of who I am, or does it just distract from the fact that I'm ready for graduate-level art history? I'm inclined to think it's the latter. Recent conversations with people who don't really know anything grad admissions are making me think twice. Thoughts from people who are well-acquainted with the field and the admissions process? If any of you are making a similar transition I'd love to chat!
