it is unfortunate that 'wanting' and 'needing' are not taken into account for congressional allotments. my magic eight ball has been a good friend for this time of purgatory. it has helped to hear of the variety of funding possibilities. at my institution and department, funding is not provided. advisors may fund students if they have money, but it is rare. and those students work for that money, it isn't free. not that i don't covet it anyway. it is highly encouraged (read - necessary) to be self funded for tuition, living and research monies. the summer is always the toughest time to eke out anything. grad students compete within the department, within the college, the grad division, and the university - as well as external funding. to be honest, i would have preferred to hear that everyone was funded up the wazoo. that would have made me more optimistic about the opportunities and conditions at places across the country. what is the optimum learning/training environment for grad students - at least for funding?

hm is significant. access to teragrid, learning experience, and good job on you. and my personal tension will transition to happy happy celebration when nsf decides to release my hm list. waving about a vague 'still under review' email does nothing for concise explanations, as many have noted. i will be super stoked. while this may feel endless, there are many more applicants in a fortunate position this year. do your best work and apply for lots - it will work out at some point. better to focus on questions that interest you than lackluster questions that aren't your teacup, it is your career and passion. don't worry about other people. kumbaya chappies.

psi_light - my deepest condolences.

"Welcome to the FastLane Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). Due to the complexity of the current budget situation, the 2009 GRFP awards will be announced in installments based on fields of study and other factors. The first installment is now available on FastLane. Awardees, as well as Applicants not recommended for funding, have been notified by email. Recipients of Honorable Mention and any additional Fellowship award offers will be forthcoming. Applicant ratings sheets will be available after all award announcements have been made. We thank you for your patience. " and we're back!

as hekog, blah2009 et al. have calculated the #s vary considerably. EHR contributes the majority of funds to the grfp, but other funding sources chip in to bring it up to full. we will see, eh? i suggest that this graduate experience with the nsf review process may come back to haunt some of us, in the form of progression in careers landing applicants on proposal review boards (or, heavens forbid, your subdiscipline's nsf panel). what lessons from this process will you promote in your reviews, or even future proposals? turn of the wheel and all that.

no. but golly golly i hope.

thanks for the link hekog. further on pg 5, the #of grad students involved is interesting (and these are all supported activities under the Education and Human Resources Directorate) Graduate Students FY08 estimate=7,553 FY09 estimate=7,710 FY09 arra estimate = 1,650 FY10 estimate = 8,403 i think the language in the release hekog referred could be parsed as well (again for EHR only, and not including arra funds): "Graduate Research Fellowships (GRF) (-$4.42 million, to a total of $102.58 million). In FY 2010, approximately 1,654 new Fellows will be supported. In response to the Administration

as if nsf doesn't know and track ip addresses with online application submissions and forum trolling. reposting this seems appropriate: RT "# @schar Thank you for notifying us. We will consider, and notify you. Remember, the internet is omniscient.6:21 AM Apr 23rd from web in reply to schar"

+6 for my area. due to increased #of applications?
-
next week, based on past performances, the grfp site will take down the 'one week' estimate and replace it with nothing. in two weeks, that message will be replaced by a different vague message postponing release.
-
routine maintenance, most likely. the message is the same as every other sunday update.

checking this forum is a hit from the academicrack pipe. forgive me if this was posted previously, but 190+ pgs is a bit much to dblchk. was this (citation below) the impetus behind the purported award # increases? http://www.nber.org/papers/w11623 Supporting "The Best and Brightest" in Science and Engineering: NSF Graduate Research Fellowships Richard B. pick a number, any number. but what are the odds? another 200 awards (200 in 2000 limbo = 10% maybe) or (500 in 2000 = 25% maybe) or are there mitigations to consider- (how are the additional awards doled out?) directorates and divisions have different sized packages, and may give out #s of awards? like the women in computer and engineering program? will additional #s come from fields of study, and simply be the next highest rated proposal not funded in the first cycle? is it seniors v seniors, first yr v first yr, second v second? what are the 'other factors' - highschool location, URMs, what else?
-
this was my bet. what is yours? it seems reasonable to guess the announcements are tonight. even if not, it has to happen at some point - so no harm no foul. what does imminent really mean anyway?

not that this means anything on the part of fastlane, more like a poor connection on my end but accessing award/hm lists yields "The system is temporarily unavailable. Please notify the system administrator if this message persists."

congress approved stimulus plan for nsf on may 8th (not the 11th) per http://www.nsf.gov/recovery/ for financial activity file available 12 may 2009 http://www.nsf.gov/recovery/2009/05/12/ ... 122009.xls

"For those applicants still waiting for notification of their 2009 applications, the approximate timeline for notifications is in approximately one week." how many more approximations could one fit into that sentence?

no. the arguments to justify the original use were false. the ridiculous attempt to say that a derogatory epithet was mere common vernacular and accepted, and then to repeat the use (as an epithet) was not justified. to further support these arguments by arguing intolerance on the part of posters who have expressed discomfort with usage is blatantly dubious. this forum is not the place to have a debate on definitions. it is not a place that should tolerate or support, implicitly or in the case of several posters - explicitly, any type of exclusion or language that continues discrimination patterns. i don't care what you say in your speech patterns - if you choose to post to a universal online forum your words will be interpreted by a literal definition that does not trend toward a casual conversation. Words have history and consequence. Try substituting any number of different derogatory epithets that focus on minority groups and see how comfortable it is to justify usage patterns. Then check out the trends in statistics with NSF for inclusion of different groups and retention through academics and research. It is disappointing to witness this occur, especially amongst a group of people professing to have applied (or accepted) an award that indicated they are among the best and brightest in science. Behave yourselves in an ethical and considerate manner. It is wrong to be mean to people and it is wrong to use hurtful language. Please stop.

you made a mistake in your word choice. and you are incorrect to say that your written words should be tolerated in comparison to other posts.
