  1. Thanks, that really helps! I'm scared when you say it's as expensive as Stanford, because I'd get $24,000 from Stanford and only $13,500CAD from Toronto. Is that enough to live on? No caffeine in Mountain Dew? That's a tragedy if I've ever heard one! Okay, I will stop monopolizing the thread with my questions now... good luck to everyone still waiting or trying to make a decision!
  2. Yeah, I saw that, thanks! Even though it hasn't been updated in 3 years, it's still reassuring. I know that I'm incredibly lucky to be presented with such a tough decision, but I sort of wish I didn't have to make it--I'm SO indecisive!
  3. Yeah... I'm not sure I'd want to stay in Canada forever, so I definitely need a degree with leverage in the States, too. I will definitely have to talk to my profs. I thought I knew which way I was leaning, and now suddenly I feel like I'm back to square one Thanks for your input!
  4. Thanks! It's for a direct-entry (no MA) PhD. I know it's fantastic, but I'm wondering *how* fantastic It's hard to gauge that when it's not listed with USNews, phds.org, or any of the others.
  5. Just got notification in the mail that I was accepted to UToronto!!! Does anyone know how Toronto compares to US schools in terms of reputation? And especially to Stanford, Brown, and Rutgers? There's no mention of a visit (silly Canadians, doing things differently)... I was hoping I'd get to meet the legendary Natalie Zemon Davis, even if I decide not to go there. Now that I've officially heard from all my schools, I'm not so paranoid, so I can mention that I go to UMich for undergrad--I know a lot of people here are looking at our department, so let me know if you have any questions!

    Visit Days

I would say get confirmation from those three schools that either you're rejected or that they haven't decided yet--and if it's the latter, find out when the visit is. I ended up having to shell out $770 to change a flight to one school because it overlapped with a visit at another, and it's not clear I'm going to be reimbursed for any of it :| So I would say it's definitely better to avoid conflicts, if possible!
  7. ooh ooh, can you post the Women's History list? I always meant to go to the bookstore to look at the USNews rankings, but I never got around to it. Everyone was just screaming "fit! fit!" before so it didn't seem so important. But now that I'm trying to make a decision, ranking seems to matter more. Thanks!
  8. As an update, my status page FINALLY changed to show my NW rejection. Not surprised, considering the faculty match wasn't good (story of my life; I wish my advisors had been more helpful when I was deciding where to apply...). Another question for everyone, while I'm posting: How much have you been contacted by faculty at the schools to which you've been accepted? With one school the profs in my area have e-mailed me, and with another I haven't heard a word. I'm just trying to figure out which of these (if any) is "normal practice." Thanks!
  9. Sorry to hear that, dizzydancer. But seriously, what's up with Northwestern?!!? I still haven't heard anything, and from the recent post on the results page, I'm not the only one. Unless someone's sitting there on a Saturday manually entering each rejection into the computer system, I don't get what's going on. The visit is in two weeks, so it would be really nice to know either way
  10. I called the program on Wednesday (omg scary!), mostly because I know that the visit is soon and the uncertainty is literally driving me insane. The grad assistant wasn't around, but the woman I talked to in the main History office said that invites to the Open House (and I think rejections as well?) were going out "in the next day." I still haven't gotten anything and the "view decision" link still hasn't appeared, so I don't know how accurate that info was. Maybe we'll hear today? I already have 2 offers so it's not a huge deal if I don't get in, but like you, I just wish I KNEW. Good luck!
  11. Cornell, I admire your bravery in calling at all. I'm much too terrified to call any school, even the ones I already heard from. Congrats to the two people who posted they got into Northwestern! Care to reveal yourselves and share any more details (who notified, when the visit is, etc.)?
  12. I just got a waitlist offer from Brown in the mail. They don't admit anyone without a fellowship, so basically they're just waiting to see if they have money to give me. I already have two great offers with funding, so I'm not sure it's worth it to ask to stay on the Brown waitlist. The prof I want to work with there is great, but doesn't have tenure yet. What do you guys think?
  13. Geeze, schools really need to get their acts together. I'm glad my status changed because I got to be excited last night instead of waiting for the e-mail this morning! Yeah, I'll be at the Open House, but it's the same week at Stanford so I'm still trying to figure out the logistics. Changing my flight will cost $400-700, so I might have to miss the second day at Rutgers Either way, I have to miss an entire week of school. I hope my profs/GSIs understand... Anyway, see you there!
  14. Thanks! I didn't really "find out to check;" I log in to all my status pages every night (just in case) I also got an official e-mail from Rutgers overnight. Good luck!
  15. Not to change the subject, guys, but I just checked the online status page and I got into Rutgers  Since I'm interested in gender history, it's quite high on my list, so I'm excited. Good luck to everyone else who applied there!
