I heard it from my POI and it is actually conducting them. I don't know more details than that as I have not heard anything from the department itself. I only heard from her about it because I was trying to organize meeting her this week while I'm in NY anyway for NYU interviews.

Saw two rejections from CUNY on the results board :/ but interesting that some things are starting to pop up there. I heard CUNY is doing interviews and campus visit stuff next week. So I suppose soon-ish we should hear about our application status.

NYUs full funding fellowship can be applied to international students. I'm only aware of this because I got my Masters in the UK and when we were told about NYU and NYCEP it seemed to be a big selling point to recruit international applicants. Additionally if you're international and haven't heard anything from NYU don't write them off yet. NYU is doing campus interviews this week but my POI said they did not necessarily invite international people (due to funding flights) but that they are still being considered. -
I'm for bio, so I'm not sure if the Anthro department as a whole is doing the same thing, but my POI has been in and out of meetings for the past week or two about admissions. It would make the most sense if the entire department had an adcomm, so maybe linguistic/socio HAS met, but they are following a different process with interviews/visits/admissions. Additionally, he stated that there are a lot of people they are interested in (particularly international applicants) that they cannot invite to visit New York due to costs, but that are still actively being considered.

Anybody heading to New York next week for NYU interviews? Or any past-applicants on here who have advice on the NYU visit? I'm excited but a little bit freaking out, haha!
-
I'm not 100% sure, but my POI is currently in South Africa but she told me that she is going back to New York for a couple weeks mid-Feb and then back to South Africa. Perhaps mid-Feb will be when the adcomm meets? I noticed from previous years from the results search that CUNY was notifying around the end of Feb.

No don't worry! NYCEP doesn't interview on its own accord, it's done by the individual universities. I've also applied to CUNY and have not heard anything yet. I have been in contact with my POI there and she's currently in South Africa and only going back to NY mid month so I assume that means they haven't met yet. Don't give up on CUNY yet -

NYU biological anthro under NYCEP. Interview was okay. Wasn't horrible, but I think it could have gone better. It was super informal, just a few general questions and some specific questions about my past academics. He was also interested in how I felt about living in New York which I found interesting. Like kro7 said, they have a shortlist but they're trying to make it shorter. POI said committees would be meeting again in the next week or two. -

Heard from my POI from NYU yesterday & we've organized a skype chat for later today. Very excited but also nervous as I'm not quite sure what to expect! -
For CUNY, the PhD deadlines were different for the Physical Anthropology subfield, so no worries on a late submission, kphd. "While the CUNY Anthropology Program as a whole requires application by December 1, Physical Anthropology applicants have until January 6 to apply; GRE scores and reference letters are required by January 30." http://cunyphysanth.org/apply.html I also realized you CAN check your rec letter status but only once you had submitted your application, so all is well there.

Thanks Alouette, Looks like you did the right thing with 750. Eric Delson responded to my e-mail today saying, "We prefer that you just write about 750 words for your essay, slightly more is OK." Looks like I have a bit more cutting down to do. I so look forward to being done with these apps, ack! Also, Alouette, did you also find that you cannot track your recommendation submissions?
-
Okay one more question about the CUNY app: I am busy editing my SOP and I just realized a descrepancy in the length. On the CUNY grad center website it gives a description of the SOP as not exceeding 750 words, yet the actual application says "max 7,000 characters" which is equivalent to about 1,000 words. Which length is best to go with? The box you copy/paste into does not cut off and will let you enter as many words as you wish, but I do not want to go over the limit .... But if I have 250 more words to play with, this could be very good! Thanks again.

Just a quick question/concern regarding the recommendation submission for the CUNY application. Is there any way to check on the status of your recommendations? On the online app there is just a place to fill in details, yet unlike every other app I have done, there appears to be no way to monitor your submissions. I just wanted to check if this was the case for everyone, in case I'm having an extremely blonde moment & missing something right in front of me! Thanks!

HELP! Need to decide which school is better!
mp429 replied to Umbalo-gong's topic in Anthropology Forum
Hello! This forum is actually for graduate student discussions, so I'm not sure too many people are in a similar boat! I can however say that for an undergraduate degree, your education will be much more general (first two years of four you are often not taking major-related courses, anyway!). The best advice I can give you is to get ahold of a coursebook that gives listings of courses on offer + descriptions. Look at the Anthro listings & see which one offers more courses that interest you. Also look at the websites to see which courses have actually been offered in the past few years; often a University lists a course as existing but it hasn't been offered in 5+ years. Lastly, look at the lecturers/professors in the department and see if their research interests are similar to those of your own. I had a friend in the MA Anthropology program at SDSU and really loved it, so I think it's a great place. I don't know anything about the NC school though. Best of luck! -
I was told by a potential supervisor at NYU that they would be meeting end of January, as the department is on leave until then anyway; he said not to expect to hear anything before the end of Jan.

Great, thanks. I want to organize visiting the places I have applied, but was wondering if I should wait until I hear back about interviews before making plans. -

Just curious - does anyone know if interviews always happen? Would there be a situation of acceptance without an interview? I know I'm a few months early, but just thinking ahead! -

UMichigan, CUNY, and NYU for me. A few others possibly on the back burner that I am going back and forth on, but those three for sure. Biological Anthropology.
