  1. I went through the process. Call MSW admissions and inform them of the situation and they will inform you of the procedure for your specific circumstances.

Get everything in writing! This is important as improper withdrawal has serious implications regarding fees, enrolment and grades. Congrats and good luck!

Thanks for the info! I mean it's late May, so I hope there are no financial repercussions (other than the $500 deposit I paid). I don't live in Toronto, so would I have to go in person to sign anything?

How was your experience in doing this? Were they accommodating? I'm actually starting to kind of worry a bit. I've tried to search in terms of dates and last date to withdraw without financial penalty, but I've found nothing.

  2. Congratulations Scotto! Sorry, I don't have an answer to your question. Have you already paid a deposit?

I have paid the deposit and my acceptance went through. I just don't know how to officially withdraw. I'm not going to withdraw until I send all my documents in to U of T. I know I can withdraw, I just don't know the process.

Thanks for all the kind words!

To those who are going to U of T....see you in the fall!!

  3. I just got accepted to U of T from their waitlist! I got a call from U of T today and they confirmed my offer, and I accepted over the phone. Obviously, I have to accept via snail mail, however, I was wondering how do I withdraw from Ryerson since I officially confirmed my acceptance. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this?

I looked on the Ryerson website, and I couldn't find anything.

U of T was my main choice after Carleton, and Carleton isn't using their waitlist this year.

  4.  That great scotto123. Congrats! Will you end up going here or are you waiting to get into another school?

I have to hear back from York still and I'm waitlisted at U of T, and Carleton. Ultimately, my first choice is Carleton but the student limit is 25 and I doubt the wait list will move. Ryerson is a good school and I like the AOP approach to social work. I know York operates on the same approach, so if I get accepted to both then I'll have to really consider it.

Thanks! It has been a very stressful time for all of us I'm sure, but now that something is final, it is a HUGE weight lifted off my shoulders.

This message board has been a great resource for me!

  5. For all of those waiting on York... just found this very recent update on their Twitter account: (i will now be obsessively checking my myfile account! lol)

    1. . @bookluver1965 Offers usually take Admissions a day or two to process. MyFile is updated instantly. Letters then mailed.

    2. . @bookluver1965 The plan is to make a first round of offers, in the two-year MSW program, today.

I don't understand what's going on. Is it just me? I applied for the 1 year MSW program at York and Ryerson and haven't heard anything back at all. No mail, no email, no MyFile update, nothing. I've called as well and received no help. I know Ryerson is still to make decisions and that's fine, but York is killing me here. Has anyone heard anything about the 1 year program? I read a while back that someone got in, but since then I haven't come across anything else...

    ....starting to panic here....

Update: Ok. Got through to York's social work department and they have sent out offers in the mail throughout this month I guess. MyFile should update automatically in regards to declines and acceptances, so I guess no news is good news then. Ugh....starting to really become anxious...

  6. Everyone keeps telling me stay positive, be patient, you tried the best you could. But I dont' think they really understand what this wait feels like. What it feels like to have you life on hold waiting for this decision. What it feels like to just want to go to school this badly and the competition is crazy. I know i tried my best on my essays my average is a B+/A- which isn't the best. But i have direct social work experience in shelters, self/esteem empowerment women's group facilitation, employment counselling. IM just thankful I have this forum to air out my fustration. Gd luck to everyone still waiting, I really wish you all the best. IT will be over soon!!!

Be patient! just kidding. But yeah, I'm right there with you on this one. My partner and I are pretty much in limbo right now in terms of where we're going to be living come this September. Our lease ends at the end of August, and I'm pretty much at the point of not knowing what to do. This potential acceptance will also mean a fresh start for both of us in a new city. Frankly, Peterborough is not the city we can sustain a life in where it's rare to find full time employment (even in my chosen field). I have an B+/A- average as well, and I have 5 years in the field working with children and youth with mental health diagnosis, children's aid, and now a crisis shelter.

So, you're not alone in this. I'm literally driving my partner up the wall due to my anxiety and stressed demeanor. They really need to figure out a better way to deliver acceptances on time. I think someone should do a study on the effects of graduate admission timelines and one's mental health. Could be interesting?

  7. Well if York has sent out offers for 1st year FT MSW, then I'm probably not getting in since I have no change on "MyFile". (No Decision Yet). Ryerson is also taking forever too. I'm starting to really get frustrated and also become anxiety ridden. I check my mailbox, email, MyFile, and RAMSS everyday, sometimes multiple times a day.

I feel like just calling it a day, since I'm pretty much under the impression I'm not going anywhere this year. Agh.

  8. I am curious to know if anyone has inquired about student loans? Do grad students in Ontario tend to get more generous loans than undergrad? I completed an online calculator from my home province and if I used it correctly I am not going to get much money left over after paying for tuition and books. Maybe $350 per mth for living expenses. Luckily I've been building a grad study fund otherwise I may have needed to turn my offer(s) down because of the student loan amount. Imagine...

I've thought this too Jenste. I'm assuming that OSAP or any student loans agency would grant more for graduate programs. I would hope at least. If not, then I would have to look at other options. I'm already looking at 35 k in students loan debt, why not another 15?

  9. Yup, saying if I get in, this will be used as my student number. :S does every school do this. I find this very inappropriate, its kinda like getting your hopes up...

Yeah, I got the email as well. It definitely got my hopes up to be dashed in a matter of seconds.I thought for a second that I was accepted of their waitlist. I am legitimately starting to hate the wait. Easter dinner was ridiculous. Literally every family member; "so have you heard back yet?".

Since people that have applied to 2 year programs are soon to be hearing back from schools, should I be worried? (I applied to 1 yr programs). I know Ryerson emails declines, and I haven't received an email yet. However, York U still hasn't said anything and I've tried calling them to be put on hold every time for way too long.

Maybe I'm being impatient, but based on the outcome, my partner and I are looking to move. So coupled with choosing a school, we have to choose a prospective city where we're going to settle down as well. (Peterborough isn't suitable for two new graduates; no stable work). Needless to say, I'm stressed.

  10. I applied for the Ryerson 1 yr program too and no word yet! I did call this week to see what's going on and was told my application has been forwarded to the department to make a decision. So if you haven't heard anything yet, it's still hopeful. You would've known by now if you were rejected. Good luck!

Well that's good then. I knew that declines come by email, so I guess no news is good news. Although, the wait is starting to really take its toll lol.

  11. I called Ryerson and they said that they're sending out decisions throughout March and early April. Declines go out by email only, and acceptances go out by regular mail. So, if you haven't heard anything yet then no news is good news I guess.

I tried to contact York but I was on hold for too long and the 2nd time I called, the call unexpectedly dropped. So I'm a little frustrated with them lol.

  12. Still nothing for me from York or Ryerson. I want to say no news is good news, but since people have been hearing back already I'm not too hopeful....

***Help: If anyone knows of any job postings (social work or social work related) in the Ottawa or Toronto area that would be great. I'm looking to move out of the Peterborough area since there is no stable work here.....relief work at CMHA is just giving me enough to barely get by...any info would be appreciated...
