  1. Happy six year anniversary, everyone! I've been lurking on the boards for a while but I just scheduled my defense (!!) and wanted to log back in to check on how everyone is doing. Is anyone else from the 2013 GC cohort finishing this year?
  2. I'm not sure it makes sense to even consider a non-US program if you plan for a career as an academic in the US but I'm sure there are exceptions. Recent hiring trends have not favored those shorter doctoral programs, though.
  3. Lucky me, I got a PERSONALIZED PM reply from Prospie. He writes, in part: "Unfortunately for you that weakness is an unshakable trait that will last far longer than this little exchange and be a much greater detriment to your career than the fact that I do not put up with bullshit and lack the patience to lick the wounds of idiots. Do you think Rosalind Krauss - or any other significant thinker for that matter - is a nice person? No. They're always assholes with overwhelming personalities. I'd say my unpopularity indicates great things. <snip -- fuzzy>." OH BOY.
  4. Hi everyone. This is a strange situation that I already posted to the Art History board, but it's not field specific, and I could use broader input... hope no one minds the repost! I hope someone can give me some advice on a fairly unusual situation. I applied to PhD programs in Art History in LA and in NYC, where I am currently based. My applications were geographically specific because I am in a band that has achieved a fair amount of success over the past two years. By no means mainstream top 40, but a familiar name in certain circles (read: among Brooklyn 20-somethings). I did not mention the band anywhere on my application, because I thought it would be a nonissue, as we only tour during the summer, and as I have so far been able to balance school with my other commitments. Since I started my apps and made this decision, we've had some more commercial success, and one song in particular has been featured on a few TV shows, which has raised our overall profile and standing in Google search results. These past few days, I've received emails from POIs asking if I am the same XYZ (my name is uncommon) from the band XYZ. I'm guessing they Googled me? It seems unlikely that they recognized my name. So, what do I do? I obviously can't lie, and don't want to. But I want to make it clear that I am capable and committed to the PhD track. Does this put me at an advantage or a disadvantage? Help! Panicked, and need to reply to these emails sooner than later...

  6. I agree with lefilsdhomme - don't mention it. If it's noticed, it will read as a typo, nothing more. Anecdotally, a good friend of mine realized too late that she had dropped the 'e' at the end of Shakespeare in every single version of her SOP, also a typo. She got into over half the grad lit programs she applied to, including Ivies. And I remember another anecdote on grad cafe about an applicant using the wrong program name in his/her SOP, and being admitted all the same. Not sure if I saw that in Art History or elsewhere (site-wide lurker!) but it stuck with me, because, well, damn. I am very curious about this how you included a French sentence for rhetorical effect, lefilsdhomme! Can you spill more details??
  7. Just heard back from the grad admissions coordinator/admin at Stanford regarding my 'Incomplete' status on applyweb - they are still sorting through and matching applications. Given their relatively early deadline, I'm guessing this means they got more than a handful of applicants... But it will feel so good to be admitted knowing we were one applicant out of hundreds! At least that's what I tell myself. Staying positive!
