  1. I love john rawls and Lemeard: Thanks for the advice! Yes, I agree that all you need is one and I am very fortunate to have gotten into my second choice. This is my second cycle and this process is just insane. I wish you all the best in trying to get off those waitlists (call, email, bribe, do whatever you can to show them how much you want to go). More importantly, if this is really your dream then don't give up just yet. I am thirty years old and this was definitely going to be my last cycle, so I went all out in editing my writing sample, writing an academic resume, and working on my "statement of purpose". It was a difficult venture and I was hoping for at least two acceptances to boost my ego. Ultimately, however, getting into my second choice (University of Washington) is pretty solid. Anyone else still waiting to hear from Rutgers? Judging from previous years, it's pretty unusual for them to be sending out acceptances so late.
  2. Dealing with rejection. I got into my second choice, but no other programs (although I am still waiting on Rutgers). It certainly stings considering how much time and effort I put into these PhD applications. How have you guys been dealing with it?
  3. Hey guys, I am still waiting to hear from Brandeis, American (SIS), and Rutgers. I know that those slow folks in New Jersey haven't replied to anyone yet, but what about Brandeis and/or American? Has anyone heard from them yet?
  4. Hi, I was very fortunate to be accepted to the Jackson School with a fellowship. I got a phone call from Pekannen two weeks ago and have received a letter of acceptance. I actually applied to 12 schools in this cycle and so far this is the only positive result. Still waiting to hear back from Rutgers, American, Brandeis, and (keeping fingers crossed on) UVA. However, there is a 95 percent chance that I will be taking the offer from Jackson. best, Porthos
  5. Thanks for the advice Penelope and Cooperstreet! I will let you know how things go. best, Porthos
  6. Thanks for the reply Cooper! I've been surprised to learn that my grad GPA is that low.... What I found in doing my degree was that a B was easy to get but an A was just as hard as undergrad. I went to GW - Elliott school. Degree in International Relations.
  7. Dear all, I am a prospective application to a variety of PhD programs in Political Science (Virginia, Minnesota, WashU, Denver, and others). My undergrad and grad GPAs were ok (3.49 and 3.54, respectively). My GRE scores are fine (690, 690, 6.0). What I hope will distinguish me from the other average students is that over the last three years I've taught ten Poli Sci undergrad courses at a large state university on the east coast. I've taught 6 separate courses and the classes had an average of 40 students per class.... . My question is - will PhD programs actually give a damn? I know that published research is pretty important, but I haven't really heard much about teaching experience. Thanks for your replies!
