UF typically takes in around 5 new students, but sometimes it ends up being less or a little more depending on how many TAships they have. They have also been accepting a couple of unfunded students. I wouldn't worry about the status page unless you know that you don't meet the minimum requirements to be accepted into the graduate school.

I didn't get a funding package from UW. I know that the money situation there isn't good at all. It was my top choice because I visited in 2008 (also on the alternate list for funding) and I really liked the department, but I think I'm going to have to get over the dream and go somewhere that isn't financially suffering as much (i.e. Texas). Texas by the way was pretty awesome. They have amazing facilities, badass professors in my field, pretty cool grad students, and lots of funding. So if I end up going there it won't be half bad. I did finally get a rejection from Yale, so I'm not too much of a ninja I've decided that I am incapable of being accepted by private schools. I think UVA is just sitting on its rejections.

For what it's worth, a couple people at the UT visiting weekend had already been to UVA's visiting weekend.

Haha, I can make people cry with my rhetorical analyses. Just kidding... Thanks for the congratulations everyone. I am going to UT's visiting days soon, which is pretty exciting. I got an acceptance packet from the graduate school at UW, but haven't received anything from the department yet. That is making me anxious. I hope we all get more feedback soon.

Admitted to UNC's PhD program! No word yet on funding.

Yes, my life is just one big gender study.

Hello all. I find myself back on these fora after a two year hiatus during which I got an MA in Classics. This time I'm applying out to PhD programs. I didn't apply to any safety schools this time because I have the option of staying in my current department if necessary. I do really want to move away and experience a new department though, so I'm anxious to start hearing back. My schools are listed below. My area is Latin prose, particularly Cicero. I'm interested in republican period politics and literature and their relevance to imperial authors, and I moonlight in gender studies.

I'm on four funding alternate lists. Decline your unwanted offers ASAP! amabo te

Gainesville is not really a commuter town. The towns surrounding it are populated sparsely by rednecks and you'd be lucky to find a Wal-Mart in them. And I'm pretty sure that Gainesville is the only place where UF has a campus (it always amuses me when people say UF-Gainesville around here). People say to avoid Paradigm properties because they're overpriced, but they own most of the big apartment complexes. Museum Walk is my favorite one of those--no idea how much it costs though. There really is a ton of housing options in Gainesville. You might want to check the classifieds at alligator.org. I might have a condo to rent, but I won't know if it's available until May. If it is, I might post it here for you aspiring gators.

This is probably a long shot, but did anyone around here get a funding offer from UW-Seattle? I'm on the alternate list , and it's killing me.

I'm not too depressed. I've been accepted to 4 schools so far, but wait listed for funding at 3 (one of which is my alma mater, so I knew they would do that because they know I probably won't attend). UMD is interested in offering me a TAship, and I'm visiting them in a week. The program is actually a perfect fit for my research interests due to the faculty, and earning an MA there would probably be beneficial to me in many ways. I live on the east coast, so moving out to UCSB would be a big ordeal, and we all know cost of living there is high, etc. Because UMD is enthusiastic about me and UCSB is lukewarm, I think I'll give up my west coast dreams for a department that is ready to support me financially and personally. I'm so tired of waiting on my other schools, though. I have been expecting rejection from UNC since day 1, and it hasn't come yet. I'm thinking maybe they disliked my application so much they chose not to notify me. The others are UCLA and Buffalo...but I just found out the faculty member that I said I was interested in at Buffalo retired in December. lol

I wonder where my rejection from UNC is. I got rejected from Texas today too. Still waiting for 3 more. UCSB made their funding decisions today. I'm pretty high on the waiting list, but I'm not sure I want it anymore. I would probably only get an MA there, and I've been accepted to another MA program that is offering financial support. It seems like a lot of places are accepting more than they can fund this year.

Do you have any professors (maybe your referees) that you can ask this question to? I find that my profs are the most accurate source for how a program is perceived in the field, as they are in the field themselves.
-
Congrats you guys. My professor advised me not to apply to BU, I think on the basis that he didn't know anything about it or its reputation either. He said the same thing about Columbia, "I don't know what's going on up there."
-
My impression is that many departments will admit more than they can fund and more than they expect to attend. I'm on a waitlist for funding at one of my schools.

I got a letter in the mail and I e-mailed the grad advisor. She said the faculty would meet in March to make funding decisions. I wouldn't be surprised if they offered some people funding already, though.

Haha. That happens to me, too. Last week I dreamed that I had been accepted to UWashington and moved to Seattle. I got into UW for real this weekend. I can't wait to have another dream!

I guess I'll go ahead and post my stats. I'm interested in gender in antiquity, Latin poetry, ancient religions, and more. My interests are broad at this point, as I think they should be. I'm waiting on UCLA, UWa, UPenn, Maryland CP, Texas, SUNY Buffalo, UNC, and UFL. Have been accepted to UCSB (it seems we all have been.) I'm wondering why so many people applied there--I did because of the number of faculty who do gender/cultural studies.
-
I was accepted to UCSB today as well.

I applied to 3 Masters and 7 PhD programs. I took my chances and applied to moderately competitive programs. I think it would be best to go straight into a PhD program with funding, but if that doesn't pan out, doing an MA would obviously be beneficial in the meantime. I actually really like the faculty at the MA-only departments to which I applied, so it wouldn't be that bad if they end up being my only option.
-
They sent an automated e-mail that said the application status is available on the website. Maybe they haven't made a decision about yours yet.

The decision times of different departments are not reliable indicators of when decisions will be made by Classics departments at the same schools. I've gotten a rejection from Duke so far.
