First acceptance to UTSW!!! So excited.
-
At the airport after my first interveiw. Any one else interviewing at UTSW you are going to have a great time.
-
Official rejection from Stanford. Glad to finally know. Now just waiting for Berkeley to give me the official no.

Thanks! See you thereI'll be there. "Smart casual" is code for "business casual" for the Interviews on Friday. For the other events it means "casual" but not anything too revealing or inappropriate - hence "smart" . Typical Dallas attire requires a bit more effort than a T-shirt and jeans, so try and imagine that when packing. Hope it helps! See you next week! -
Anyone else going to UT southwestern next week? And what does smart casual mean?

Congratulations!Just received an acceptance to University of Pennsylvania Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics Program! My dream offer!! Freaking out right now!! To think that this time last week, I was sitting at the welcome dinner stressing about the next day's interviews! -
That's awesome congratulations.Just got an acceptance from Harvard biophysics by phone! -
How did you phrase your message about the conflict to UW-madison? What happened to you surprises me. I hope that you said something like I already scheduled another interview that weekend, and I am unable to change it. I am extremely interested in UW......(sentence or two on this). Is there a way for me to come visit another weekend?I do like the skype interview idea, if they will let you do it. Maybe they could consider doing that and then flying you out there later, if you are still interested in the program. If you acted uninterested in their program though in initial emails, then it is likely a lost cause.
I sent an email literally minutes after I received an invatation telling them that I had a conflict with the date and simply asked if their was a second weekend. After a reply from the graduate coordinator informing me i would have to come on an alternative weekend and she would let me know when the commitee had reached a decision I followed up with an email expressing my intrests in the program. Perhaps I should have included that in the first email

I think you telling them you had a conflict with their interview weekend showed that you already had an interview lined up with a higher-choice school (which was obviously true). Why should they spend money to bring a candidate up to interview who likely wouldn't accept their offer anyway? If they were indeed your top choice (and you were just being polite in not wanting to cancel an existing interview acceptance), then you would obviously pay out-of-pocket to come up and interview. I think it's just them being rational and trying to spend their $$$ on candidates with the highest chance of accepting an offer, no?
If i was actually a top choice for recruitment to UW-madison they would have made every effort to be accommodating. When duke called to invite me to interview I was told they would bring me on any weekend that was convient for me if I could not make the scheduled weekend. Since they showed so much interest I would be foolish to ask them to reschedule after they have already booked tickets for me. I suppose Its simply part of the process but I was hoping to avoid choosing between programs before I witnessed them first hand.

After consulting with my boss and other professors it seems asking me to buy my own plane ticket was a nice way of saying thanks but no thanks and I shouldn't waste my time. So it seems I must decline my invitation from UW-madison.

Did you get a call/email from stanford or just a letter in the mail? The deadline for responding to interview invites for Stanford biophysics is Jan 31, so I would assume rejections/another round of invites would go out before that time. Still no word on Berkeley/UCSF BioEng or Harvard Biophysics? -
There is hope!!! stay strong!
@ mrmolecularbiology did u get an official rejection from Stanford? or are you just assuming rejection???
I am still waiting to hear from them!
Just assuming I suspect we will know for sure by the end of the week.

Good question. Going to need to sleep on this one.I would interpret this as that they are offended and your chances of getting in are seriously diminished. That said, you already have a ton of options, and I don't know how in love you are with them, but if you're not deadset on UWM, I'd say you might want to consider declining their invitation.
It is kind of an almost rude, "screw off" message to say you can come later but they won't pay -- it also implies they won't put together a nice interview day of events for you either. They have to know that this is how it'll come off to you and also that students aren't likely to come if the flight isn't paid unless it's a top, top choice, so If they aren't serious about you, why should you commit the time/money?
-
I would still do it. In my opinion, things are still up in the air until I get acceptances.
I doubt that you will get rejected from five schools based on your stats. If it is your 3rd choice, and you have the financial means to fly yourself there, then go for it.
Thanks. I suppose until they send me any specifics I still have time to change my mind.
-
If it is your top choice, I would go for it!
What if they are my third choice? If it was you would you go?
-
I agree with Jubilee. What if they truly were your first choice, and then them saying that they wouldn't reimburse you changed your mind? If there is this much trouble before you even get there...If it's not my first choice I'd think I'd say thanks, but no thanks.
I have mixed feelings about it. I want to have options and preferably multiple acceptance offers to choose from. If I got rejected post interview from the five schools I already have interviews at and I didn't go to the alternate weekend at madison I think I would regret it.

That's awesome, mrmolbio! Are they paying for a hotel/letting you stay with a current student?
They are gonna cover hotel/food. Just got to find a way to get there.
-
Yes. I have this same issue. It's like, what am I supposed to do?
UW-Madison just emailed me back. They are willing to schedule me for an alternative weekend so long as I am willing to pay for my own airline tickets. Testing my commitment perhaps? It's worth the price for me as long as they do not try to schedule me for another weekend I already have booked.
-
I made it clear that I had already booked plane tickets and agreed to an interveiw elsewhere before I ever received their invatation
-
Anyone else have a school blow them off after they told them they had a date conflict? I'm starting to think not going to the interveiw weekend for UW-Madison= no interview.
-
-
So according to the results page UC Berkeley has finally started sending official rejections for the biophysics program BUT there was also one invatation today. So just when I had accepted my fate I find myself frantically checking my email. Just tell me already!!!!!
After double checking the interveiw invitee was an international student. Back to reality

I miss being productive in Lab. Probably could have submitted my manuscript by now if I hadn't let myself get so distracted.

Not sure what format everyone uses exactly but:
School: Small liberal arts, decently strong ranking
Major: Biochemistry, mathematics minor
GPA: 3.94
GRE: Quant = 170; Reading = 166; Writing = 4.5
Didn't submit subject test scores
Research experience: Two summers in biotech industry internship and one summer at an Ivy REU in biochemistry. Honors thesis research in bioinorganic chemistry.
I'm also a four year varsity athlete.
Just got rejected from MIT CSBi, though...
I have a similar GPA, and decent research experience; your GRE scores blow mine out of the water. Quite impressive.
