  1. While it may not necessarily be a direct correlation to my waitlist status, I'd still be interested to hear any updates from those admitted to UT Austin Media Studies PhD, and their final decisions. Feel free to PM, as always.
  2. Congrats!! You'll def have a great shot with PhD with your MA options. Do you know where you'll choose? Did you say this was your second time applying?
  3. Your U. Iowa status must be an unofficial waitlist!
  4. Wow! Congrats! The MA to PhD programs look great.
  5. If Iowa has an administrative Graduate contact you can call, go for it! And even a lot of us who have an MA also have trouble with PhD admissions! If the fellowship is connected to the field or just something you are interested in, and is also a good means to save up money, go for it too. I think a lot of these guys received funding for their MA programs in the states (I was abroad), so they might have some insight on ones you could apply to for the next round. Something I think I've learned this year is, if you get funded for a decent MA program and do really well there, it seems like a better shot than going to a prestigious for pay MA. And even if an MA is not always required for some PhD applications, they are certainly encouraged. I have heard of cases where some go from BA to PhD in FIlm Studies, but the competition for that appears even tighter than anything else. Good luck!
  6. For any of you silent lurkers out there --- like how I was last year and looking up admissions statistics -- and are beginning to pursue your PhD or MA plans in Film/Media Studies-- I found this after my submissions and would have found it very helpful beforehand. It is written by the great Jonathan Gray at Wisconsin and is the concluding post of a 3-part series about pursuing graduate school in our field. http://www.extratextual.tv/2011/08/applying-to-grad-schools-in-media-studies-part-3-how-do-you-get-in/ Also, this UC Berkeley guide to Statement of Purpose writing: https://career.berkeley.edu/grad/gradstatement.stm
  7. Have a great time on the visits, good luck deciding, and stay in touch!
  8. Will most of you with these great options likely make choices closer to April 15? Congrats to all, again!
  9. Some folks are starting to hear back from USC Annenberg? Anyone not heard a peep from there or from NYU MCC? I've seen results for both schools, both acceptances and rejections on results lately, I believe.
  10. I don't believe there is an official waitlist yet. I think this is dependent on hearing back from those who have been accepted first, to evaluate waitlist possibilities. So there are those that have received accepted and rejected notifications, and those that are in this in limbo phase that are hoping their hopeful future colleagues have received better offers they will accept! Sending good thoughts to everyone.
  11. Dear Fellow Media Studies Compatriots, If you've been accepted to Media Studies (PhD) at Austin, and you are certain you will not be accepting the offer, please, please, please let them know!
  12. Big Congrats on Michigan. One of my top choices so I fear it will not go my way. May I ask how you were notified? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to disclose details.
  13. To quote Tom Petty, 'The waiiiitiiiiiing is the hardest part.'
  14. Congratulations everyone! @ErnestPWorrell and whoever else may know -- With UT -- will they be informing acceptances, rejections, and wait-lists (something they seem to commonly do) all within the week?
  15. I think it also matters in the end what you got? And the scales seem different based on undergrad and grad level UK, I've only seen undergrad conversions. My UK uni, the MA program you could Fail, Pass, Pass with Merit, or Pass with Distinction. A Merit was 65+, a Distinction 70+, High Distinction 75+. I think as you said earlier, some higher up schools are tough graders so maybe it is better to get a Merit at a very good uni than a 4.0/Distinction at a so-so place. I saw with London School of Economics PhD programs, they said to only apply if you already have a Merit in the Masters. Curious to see how it all translates and matters in the end.
  16. I just got an e-mail, although explicitly unrelated to Admissions, regarding Financial Aid at Madison.
